According to Pete Olsen at Wide Rights, the NFL has added the words “sexual orientation” to the anti-discrimination clause of the new player contract.
So how long before we see the first active-roster “out” NFL players?

Not seeing any out player has 0% to do with any institutional discrimination. So, it’ll be a while.
Yes, but an official institutional bias FOR non-discrimination will hopefully start to change the player culture enough to allow it. And that’s entirely outside the “demographic inevitability” factor.
I think you would need 5-10 quality players, post retirement, to out themselves, before any current players and i think that would be hard to do for a while.
Good on ya, NFL.
Well I think Tim Tebow came out in his Superbowl ad last year, so that’s one right?
… what you say his mother wasn’t advocating for her gay son… had me fooled.
It’s a tiny step forward for the NFL but it makes it easier for them to quash homophobic behavior among their players whether a gay player is involved or not.
That’s a good point. Right now, I think we have two out retired NFL players, Dave Kopay and Esera Toualo (whom I was thisfar from in a swimming pool once…sigh).
