NFL coaching carousel 2019

CBS reporting Rivera to Washington is a done deal: Ron Rivera agrees to five-year deal to become Redskins' new head coach - CBSSports.com

This is definitely going to be one of those years with a slow moving carousel rather than a Black Monday rip the bandaid off years.

The Cowboys are leading in the “slow painful breakup” competition – Jerry Jones and Jason Garrett met today, and there is apparently still no resolution on whether or not Garrett is gone. (IIRC, Garrett’s contract with the Cowboys expires tomorrow, as well.)

Is there really any doubt? His contract is up, and there’s been absolutely no indication it will be renewed. He technically won’t be fired but the writing is on the wall in flaming letters 20 feet tall.

In other news, Dorsey is out as GM in Cleveland.

It makes sense after firing Kitchens, but I still think Jimmy Haslam is way too hands on. He needs to pick either a GM or head coach and let that person build the rest of the organization and let it stick for a minimum of 3 seasons. Picking and choosing individuals and forcing your ‘head’ honcho to deal with it has been a recipe for disaster. The Browns have had 9 head coaches (+ 2 interim coaches) over the last 20 years, lasting an average of 28 games, i.e. not even 2 full seasons, and 9 GMs, lasting an average of 34 games, i.e. just over 2 full seasons.

The Browns really want 49ers East, apparently. For their Head Coach vacancy, they’re interviewing SF’s Defensive Coordinator Robert Saleh as well as offensive assistants Mike LaFleur (passing game coordinator) and Mike McDaniel (running game coordinator).

I don’t know too much about the two Mike’s. It could be a McVay-esque thing where anyone touched by Shanahan is automatically HC material, or the Browns may be confused by their last names.

Saleh I’m not sure is ready to move up. The defense last season was absolute trash. The improvement this year was aided by a massive influx of talent and by replacing key position coaches at D-line and secondary. He has improved his game-planning and in-game adjustments, and it’s clear he’s a great sideline presence who played will play harder for him.

I really don’t think that there’s any doubt, no, and one would expect that Jones would have been planning for this eventuality since last season (or, if nothing else, when they spent much of this season scuffling around .500).

But, good grief, a multi-day, multi-meeting process to say “goodbye?” It’s like the most awkward romantic break-up ever. And, as this drags on, Garrett’s staff is in limbo, and it’s not doing them any favors for trying to land new gigs.

Yeah, he clearly seems to be Snyder 2.0. He is determined to Actively CEO his way to a winning football team, which doesn’t work very well usually.

In the “it’s not MY fault!” category, the Bears fired ther offensive coordinator, their offensive line coach, the TE coach, and an assistant special teams coach. They kept their head coach, their GM, and said Trubisky will be their unquestionable starting QB for next year.

Why would anyone be insane enough to work as coach or GM in Cleveland under the Haslams?

By the way, there are a bunch of sports reporters in Cleveland who should be fired.

Still no news from Dallas; Garrett and the Cowboys aren’t meeting today. Garrett is apparently meeting with the Jones tomorrow for still more discussions on his fate.

This article from CBS hypothesizes that Jones and Garrett have been discussing putting Garrett into some other role within the organization, and that Jones likely doesn’t feel a rush to make any move at the moment, since many of the likely head-coaching candidates are with teams that are in the playoffs right now.

It also indicates that most of Garrett’s staff is also no longer under contract, so they’re free to seek out new jobs now, at least.

Cowboys finally end the Garrett drama, he’s out.

I get the sense that the Joneses were trying to get Garrett to accept some other position with the Cowboys…but, since Jerry is the GM, and his kids hold most of the other senior leadership positions, any job they gave Garrett would have been something fairly powerless. If so, I could totally see Garrett saying, “thanks, Jerry, but no thanks.”

Uche Nwaneri, a former starting guard for the Jaguars, and who spent training camp with the Cowboys in 2014, is active on Reddit, under the moniker TheObservantLineman. He made a post on Reddit today, entitled “Jason Garrett was not the leader the Cowboys needed, but he is not the nucleus of the Cowboy’s problems. Jerry Jones is. A players perspective.

He lays the issues at Jones’ feet, both for being a particularly meddlesome owner/GM, as well as for perpetuating an atmosphere and attitude of superiority with the Cowboys that hasn’t been supported by their level of play for the past two-plus decades.

The Cowboys officially (and finally) let Jason Garrett go yesterday; today, they announced that they’ve hired former Packers head coach Mike McCarthy.

McCarthy’s big failure in Green Bay was that he didn’t get along with Aaron Rodgers. I don’t think he was a terrible coach. If he gets along better with Dallas’s personnel he should do well. As well as any head coach can do with Jerry Jones putting a leash around his neck in any case.

To quote Mr. Burns from “The Simpsons” fame: “Well, DUH!”

Panthers hire Rhule away from Baylor.

It was pretty clear that, in the last few years that McCarthy was in Green Bay, he and Rodgers weren’t on the same page anymore, and that probably did lead to his departure. But, I also think that the Packers (who had built their Super Bowl winning team in 2010 almost exclusively through the draft and UFAs) had way too many misses on talent in the last few years of Ted Thompson’s GM run – which, of course, wasn’t McCarthy’s fault.

Giants supposedly had Rhule as their #1 target , he was born and raised in NYC
