NFL Coaching Carousel: 2024-2025 Edition

Inexplicably, Jim Irsay has announced that GM Chris Ballard and head coach Shane Steichen will return next season.

I’m okay with Steichen returning, but Chris Ballard has been a disaster during his time as GM, and it just boggles my mind that he’s being brought back to fuck the team up at least one more time.

The Titans, which finished 3-14 and earned the first pick in this year’s draft, have fired their GM, Ran Carthon, but are keeping head coach Brian Callahan.

Eh, feels like everyone is gnashing and wailing over nothing. I think it’s pretty clear that Johnson is their number 1 choice, but all they can do is a zoom meeting with him until the Lions are out of the playoffs. So it’s going to be a lot of zoom chats until then. Also, it’s kinda good experience for Poles. Remember last time they did all the HC interviews before hiring a GM, and then he picked a HC only two days later.

Inexplicably, nepo-baby and high-end drug user Jim Irsay will return as OWNER next year. He has been a disaster during his time as GM owner and it just boggles my mind that he’s continuing to fuck up the team (and Cleveland over the new stadium) for at least another decade.

I’m wondering if Mr. Mayonnaise is their QB of the future or if they’ll gamble on one of the guys in this draft being better than predicted.

And will it be the decision of whoever the next GM will be?

While I agree with you, it’s much harder to fire the owner than the GM.

And now the Raiders fire Antonio Pierce

Don’t be so sure. I’m not sure the dude will still be around come Week 1.

The only guy in the draft that probably justifies 1OA is Travis Hunter. In order to pass on QB they’ll need to make peace with the guy they ultimately pick. The consensus is that this is a weak and muddled group at the very top. I’m betting a new GM isn’t going to marry himself to Levis, but they seem like a candidate for Kirk Cousins or Sam Darnold to come in as a placeholder.

If Tennessee drafted him that would be pretty sensible.

How much you bet they won’t? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

(Seriously, Travis Hunter is freaking amazing.)

This has been an amazingly mundane Black Monday this year.

By my count, exactly one Head Coach and zero GMs were fired on Monday.

We did lose Mayo on Sunday. And Pierce on Tuesday. Ran Carthon got canned Tuesday as the only new GM opening. These are obviously in addition to the handful of midsession changes.

Not sure if this means that teams are just moving more slowly or if there’s going to be an uncommonly low amount of attrition.

The Cowboys’ contract with McCarthy expires tomorrow, but they apparently have exclusive negotiating rights with him for another week (through the 14th). The Bears asked the Cowboys for permission to interview McCarthy prior to then, and were told “nope.”

Oh, and this:

Poor Omni.

They do have Pete Carroll lined up. He could be an interesting fit. It’s not super exciting, but he can at least right the ship.

To be clear, someone asked about trading for a head coach and he said all options are on the table. He didn’t offer that up unprompted.

In addition to canning their special teams coordinator, the 49ers are dropping defensive coordinator Nick Sorenson. Reports are they may keep him in a different position, maybe even ST coordinator. Robert Saleh is said to be a target, depending on his traction in the head coach market.

On top of that, they promoted Klay Kubiak to offensive coordinator, but Kyle Shanahan will continue to call plays. Kyle had Klay call the final game against the Cardinals, and he did a good job (3 turnovers by a backup QB, yet another missed FG, and a colander defense weren’t his fault).

Now the GM is out in Vegas.

Am I the only one praying for Deion-Shedeur-Shilo in Las Vegas, just for the slow-motion train wreck?

Not only do I find it a little weird to dismiss the coach and GM on different days, but Telesco got canned after only one season, and Pierce after only one full season (he was interim coach for the second half of 2023).

The Raiders continue to be one of the most dysfunctional organizations in the league, and it seems like the only thing that they really know how to do at this point is to squander good talent.

According to reports, Jets, Raiders, and Jags have all requested to interview Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

A third team has requested an interview with Steve Spagnuolo

Hey…another season or two of Chris Ballard, and the Colts will be challenging them for the title.
