NFL Coaching Carousel: 2024-2025 Edition

Hmm… His kids no longer being on his team, his ego (Neon Deion), and maybe more money… Okay, that’s sounding more plausible.

Not sure Jerry’s ego can handle having Deion around, at least as a coach. That would be one short honeymoon if it happened.

I’ve seen Kellen Moore bandied about but he can’t be interviewed in person at the moment for obvious reasons.

Possibly so. On the other hand, it’s been 30 seasons since the Cowboys’ last Super Bowl win, and Jones is 82 years old – he may be willing to do the unexpected to try to get one more title.

If Dallas commits to trading up for Shedeur, probably. There’s nothing really tying him to Colorado anymore, especially if the alternative is an NFL head coaching gig for his former team.

That’s an interesting question.

Every owner says they want a Super Bowl title, but I’m not sure how serious some of them are about it.

I’ve long suspected Jones wouldn’t mind one but only on his terms - no Jimmy Johnson or somebody else getting too much of the credit or glory for architecting a winning roster and team. Otherwise, just owning the Cowboys is plenty lucrative and he gets to play at bigshot owner/GM all the while.

Sanders was on that team.

Nit: Prime Time (or just Prime). The Neon Deion thing was invented by FSU’s marketing folks and Sanders hated/hates it.

Given his history, I would be pretty shocked if Jerry Jones hired a Black football coach, let alone one as outspoken as Deion.

I stand corrected.

On the other hand, the NFL is not going to muzzle the press the way CU did.

Right. That’s what I was getting at. I think the chaos surrounding McCarthy’s departure has more to do with Jones trying to figure out how he is going to trade up to draft Shedeur. He might very well have been putting out feelers with Chicago to try to trade McCarthy to them for a first round draft pick. The next step would have been to bundle that pick with Dallas’s own first rounder and then offer Tennessee a 2 for 1 swap of first round picks. Of course if that was the plan, I’m sure McCarthy wanted none of that, and so he departed.

Once trading up to draft Shedeur was / is squared away, getting Deion to sign on as the head coach will be the easy part.

This. He’s been at Colorado for two seasons. His first season they were 4-8 after starting 3-0 and being nationally ranked. This season they finished 9-3 in the regular season, in a 4-way tie for the Big 12 conference lead, but didn’t make the playoffs due to tiebreakers. Then they got absolutely smoked by fellow conference member BYU in the Alamo Bowl. While there was notable improvement year-over-year, there’s obviously no guarantee that this success will continue next season.

My dream coaching hires would be Deion to the Cowboys and Kliff Kingsbury to the Bears.

Continuing the theme of “we are going to interview everybody,” there are reports that the Bears contacted the Steelers, about the possibility of trading for coach Mike Tomlin. They were told “go away.”

You dislike the Bears that much?

Looks like it’s actually Ben Johnson to the Bears.

Too bad for Detroit, will they be able to be as dominant next year?

Wow wow wow. I haven’t been keeping an eye on NFL news today because I assumed at most we would hear is “Ben Johnson is scheduled to interview with so and so”. This was so unbelievably fast they had to have at least something in place after the zoom interview.

Even if Johnson flames out, I’m excited for the Bears to actually do the obvious correct thing for once.

Head coaching is a very different beast, since you also have to do all the press and management stuff.

But in terms of developing a QB, it’s definitely welcome news for Caleb Williams. However it works out, this should either get him the development he needs or at least determine how high (or low) his ceiling really is.

Guess I was right:

Yeah, there’s a lot more to bring a head coach than just coming up with good game strategies and developing players properly.

But here’s hoping he does well.
