NFL MVP and POTYs

No, but that’s not what the award is for. It’s for the most valuable player, and I think Marshall was more valuable to his team than Megatron is to his this season.

Just to refine this a bit more, I don’t think great running backs are a dime a dozen, I think that adequate running backs are a dime a dozen and that you only need an adequate RB to win games in the NFL.

Look at the elite backs, Adrian Petersons’ Vikings may not make the playoffs. Marshawn Lynch’s Seahawks likely will, but a lot has to do with the fine play of Russell Wilson and that defense. Alfred Morris’s Redskins are on the bubble, but it’s RGIII that is winning the games. And Arian Foster is very, very good, but I wouldn’t say he’s irreplaceable on that Texans team. Then it’s Jamaal Charles, Chris Johnson, and Doug Martin, three very good running backs whose teams aren’t even near the playoffs despite their fine play.

But, yes, Adrian’s season is one for the ages and I would love to see him get the Player of the Year.

We have differing definition of most valuable player. Marshall is vitally important to his team, but that’s because of his team, not because he’s the best player out there. But with that definition, Andrew Luck should be MVP because he’s, by far, the most important person to his team. Or Jamaal Charles, who is the only offensive player on the Chiefs worth a shit, and his vitally valuable to his team. And, incidentally, with injuries to Broyles, Pettigrew, and Young’s idiocy and it being the Bears’ defense that wins them games, I do think Megatron is as important to the Lions as Marshall is to the Bears.

Offensive ROY is a two-man race between RG3 and Wilson. Luck has turnover-ed himself out of the running. Martin and Morris are excellent players, but their flaw is they’re not QBs.

I’d like RG3 to get it, but missing the Browns game may have hurt his ROY resume. Even as a Skins and RG3 fan, I’d not be upset if Wilson took it, the kid’s a helluva player. The determining factor may come down to who makes the playoffs (and how far they go if both teams make it).

I totally forgot about Kuechly, I revise my selection, that guy is amazing.

Offensive Player of the Year is actually not meant to go to the Most Valuable Player. It goes to the Offensive Player who has had the most outstanding season. Otherwise it would default to the MVP, assuming it was an offensive player who won that award.

Whoops. Forgot what I was talking about.

I can’t really see Wilson winning it. Yeah, he’s played very well in the second half of the season, but the Seahawks spent the first half playing “hide the quarterback” with him and people were asking why they weren’t playing Flynn. They’re still doing it, to some extent; he didn’t complete more than 20 passes in a game until Week 8, and he’s only done it three times since. He’s only thrown 30 or more passes three times. He has no 300 yard games (he’s got two if you go by combined yards). He didn’t even crack the 200 yard mark until Week 5. He’s probably not going to throw for 3,000 yards on the season. He’s also got Marshawn Lynch.

You can say some of the same things about RGIII, but his numbers are better in every category except passing touchdowns and he’s turned it over half as many times.

When does the voting for these awards take place? Will the voters get to see their post-season performance before the ballots are due?

No, these are regular season awards.

Every sevenish years, a Buccaneers running back wins offensive ROTY - Warrick Dunn in '97, Cadillac Williams in '05, and Doug Martin in 2012. Maybe?

Quick drive-by post.

I think that all else being equal, a team with 20 6-yard carries is going to beat a team with 2 60-yard carries every single time.

MVP: ADP
O-POTY: Megatron
D-POTY: Watt
O-ROTY: RG3
D-ROTY: Keuchly
Comeback: Manning
Coach: Carroll

Peterson gets the MVP no matter what happens, he’s just that impressive and his team will just miss the playoffs, that’s good enough.

Megatron broke the record and will get Offensive honors. I think every sportswriter will give Megatron the nod as consolation over ADP getting the MVP, if Peterson goes nuts against the Packers and breaks the record while locking up a playoff berth this might change.

Watt edges Smith and Tillman, though Tillman had another pick-6 today making him an interesting candidate. I’d like to see Tillman get it, he’s been wildly underrated his whole career, but Watt and Smith are in the glamour positions and are legitimately great. Another nod in Tillman’s favor, Megatron was held to 34 yards and Andre Johnson to 35 against him.

RG3 edges Luck ever so slightly based on exposure, surprise factor and by beating the Cowboys in primetime to clinch a playoff berth.

Keuchly is a little bit of a coin flip. Both Harrison Smith and Casey Hayward could get it, will probably depend on how people value CBs on winning teams versus LBs on losing ones. Wagner might be the surprise winner.

Manning gets the Comeback as consolation for Peterson getting MVP. I think Manning’s comeback after a year of rust and a new team is a bit more impressive.

Carroll won the coach of the year in tonight’s ass whipping of the Niners.

I’m changing my MVP vote to Aaron Rodgers. Offensive Player of the Year is Adrian Peterson, I’ll give Manning the Comeback Player.

Coach of the year has to be Bruce Arians. He presided over the biggest turnaround record-wise as a fill-in.
