NFL Offseason 2022

Haha!

Indianapolis Colts TE Jack Doyle has announced his retirement.

ETA: in addition to WR (and QB, to some) and other pieces, a team without a first-round pick needs to be looking for a tight end. I imagine that the Colts will be more active in the free agent market, rather than looking for solutions in this draft.

If the Giants draft a QB in the 1st round this year there would be a riot among Giants fans. There are no QB’s worth drafting this year and the Giants need so much help at so many positions. Like maybe O-line and pass rusher?

*sobs*

Ereck Flowers 2.0 here we come!

Commanders acquiring QB Carson Wentz from Colts in trade

What do the Colts plan on doing at QB? I mean, wow, that’s some slim pickins.

Market is gonna be hot for guys like Trubisky and Minshew.

Flowers was much better everywhere he played after he left the Giants. His issues there before were likely either just youth and/or bad coaching, who are now all gone.

Not thrilled about that, but it could have been worse, i.e. Trubisky. If Willis is still available at 11 they should still draft him. I wouldn’t use that pick on any other QB in this draft.

Can you set up one of those football-tossing machines on a timer?

And, it appears that the only QB they now have on their roster is Sam Ehlinger, whom they drafted in the 6th round last year, and whom I doubt they expected to be in the mix for the starting position.

I’ll lay real money that Trubisky starts somewhere and comfortably beats Wentz in on field performance.

How crazy is that?! I agree with you too. At one point Wentz was looking like a future superstar, then something happened to him. I think it was the year he tore his ACL and Foles took over, and got the Eagles to a Super Bowl championship. I wonder if that broke his spirit; an ACL tear shouldn’t turn a QB into a duck. He was never the same after that. (If I remember correctly, Wentz was even favored for the MVP that season before getting hurt.) Now it looks like he’s in the lower tier of QBs, getting shopped around when a team can’t find anything better.

I was noodling on this on the throne today. That Eagles Super Bowl team was a odd duck. They had 2 QBs who both played to an MVP level, Foles had he done what he did for a full season would have been all-time great. Afterwards both QBs immediately regress not just to average but to being borderline awful. I’m not sure I blame the injury at all in Wentz case, it seems like something else. Both he and Foles seem to struggle at basic stuff like reading blitzes and coverages, it’s not physical limitations with either one of them.

That coaching staff got pillaged and the QB brain trust, Reich, Pederson and DeFilippo, ended up failing in one regard or another. Pederson and Wentz/Foles spiraled almost immediately in the following season. Pederson was fired just 3 years after winning Philly’s first every title and couldn’t get a job in the league the following season. Which might lead you to think that Reich and DiFilippo were somehow the straw the stirred the drink. Yet Reich’s tenure in Indy has been okay but not great and when he got reunited with Wentz there was no magic there. DiFilippo pretty much got run out of town in Minnesota and Jacksonville in consecutive seasons so it’s hard to believe he was the unicorn there.

If you’re a superstitious person you might think that entire QB room made a deal with the Fae to beat Belichick and Brady and the last 5 years are the price.

Comparing Wentz’s last two years as a starter vs. Trubisky’s last two years as a starter, and they’re pretty damn close:

So then, if it’s a coaching issue, might he have a chance to be great with the right organization?

(This might be the kind of thinking that mires a franchise in mediocrity.)

Completely depends on where he goes. Put Trubisky on a bad team with little talent around him (Lions, Texans, Panthers), he’ll suck. Put him on a team with a good O-line, a solid running game, and a playmaking passcatcher or two and he’ll be fine.

Of course, you could say the same thing about half of the NFL QBs out there.

He was playing on a Super Bowl caliber team with an impressive new offensive coach and wasn’t expected to carry to team. NFL QBs can find success in the short term, and still not be a very good QB.

The only reasonable explanation is that the 2017 Eagles ran into an all-time string of good luck or that this is the rare case where 5 people’s negative traits when combined cancel each other out leaving just the good ones. Some weird football skill resonance.

Ironically the Colts seem like the PERFECT team for Trubisky. If that happens it would be pretty concrete evidence in the Trubisky v. Wentz comparison.

Good on Gutenkunst for recognizing he made a massive mistake and wasted a first round pick (and a 4th rounder) to draft Jordan Love. While I’m not a fan of Guteys, at the very least he can recognize when he’s fucked up in the past. Maybe he can salvage some resources by trading Love to whatever QB desperate team hasn’t watched him play in the NFL.

Sure would be nice to have had Tee Higgins on the Packers roster though though…

The Bears are being reported as finalizing a deal to send defensive end/linebacker Khalil Mack to the Chargers. Mack, who is a six-time Pro Bowler, missed the second half of 2021 due to a foot injury, but had six sacks in seven games before the injury.

God damn it. Another jersey I gotta retire.

Probably not the worst move for a team looking to retool, but the guy is still awesome. We definitely don’t have anyone who can fill his shoes. We will have an absolute mountain of cap space if this happens.

Edit: Supposedly no 2022 draft picks included. And only a 2nd and 6th rounder in 2023. This is a fucking terrible deal. Cap space yadda yadda, but that’s giving him away.
