Clearly Washington pulled the trigger on Wentz way too early. It would be terrible optics but they would have been in the mix for Watson, and Mayfield coming available is an interesting wrinkle.
On paper, Wentz and Mayfield don’t look all that different to me. On film, aside from the height difference, they don’t look all that different, either. They have a similar type of game, with similar weaknesses. They both have a tendency to panic and toss up ducks when the play doesn’t work out perfectly. Baker seems like he is roughly the same player at a relatively significantly cheaper price (about $10M less).
It all depends on Mayfield’s injury. He was a helluva lot better QB his first and third years before cratering last year (his PFF grade went from 85.7 in 2020 (8th in the NFL) to 63.6 (30th in the NFL). If you believe that dropoff was due to injury and that he’ll be all healthy soon, he’s a much better QB than Wentz and with higher upside. If not … well, they’ll both be in that huge morass of “win with” QBs that can play great some games and suck others.
I love watching Minshew. He’s really fun. But I wouldn’t want him as my starter. He’s like a Ryan Fitzpatrick; an interesting person, and he’ll be great at times, and just awful many other times.
This though makes a lot of sense. I would not be surprised to see this happen.
I love Minshew, too – he’s fun and charismatic, and would definitely be someone I’d like to have a beer with.
But, as I read someone on Reddit comment about him the other day, while he seems to have a fairly high floor, talent-wise, he also has a fairly low ceiling. While he seems to maybe be less likely to make dumb mistakes than some other not-quite-starter-level NFL quarterbacks, he doesn’t have a strong arm, and he’s not likely to be able to pull off the great plays, either.
What is going on with prima-donna/fragile flower NFL QBs? Kyler Murray throws an social media hissy fit, now Baker Mayfield passive aggressively “thanks” the Cleveland fans and wants a trade because the Browns (rightfully so) aren’t willing to meet his long-term contract demands at this point. And Aaron Rodgers is still being Aaron Rodgers.
The Packers are said to be trading WR Davante Adams to the Raiders, for two 2022 draft choices, including the Raiders’ first-round pick. It also appears that the Raiders have agreed to terms with Adams on a five-year contract.
From what I’ve read, the Packers were willing to match the Raiders offer, but Adams wanted to leave.
So, thanks for all those years, Davante. While some veterans leave their longtime team for more money or to chase a Super Bowl ring, you get to play for a team that has made the playoffs twice in 19 years. Good luck.
I really think the Carr thing was the biggest reason. Plus, they were barely able to get under the cap with Rodgers deal. So in order to pay him the deal he wanted, they would have cut somewhere else. Also, I love GB, but for a young millionaire I’d rather be in Vegas (the town not the football team).
I was disappointed at first, but getting a 1 and a 2 for one year of his production is probably worth it. I looked at some mocks and saw who was projected around that pick. Many have Treylon Burks from Arkansas. He is a stud. I could see him having Jamar Chase type impact for a lot less money and could allow them to upgrade the OL.
So, Watson to the Browns, and possibly Mayfield to the Colts.
Watson is going to be paid $46 million a year for the next 5 years by the Browns, and that’s guaranteed money. It would be quite Browns-ish if Watson now faces severe discipline from the NFL, possibly including suspension, and for Watson to also likely be injured or otherwise decline.
