NFL Offseason 2022

It just occurred to me, they will need new commercials where Baker Mayfield is giving Watson a tour around the stadium, showing him all the chores he needs to do to keep the place maintained, where there are leaks during rainstorms, how you need to jiggle the handle just right for the urinals, and then handing him a set of keys with tears in his eyes. While Watson says, “I think we got other guys that do this stuff.”

JuJu to the Chiefs.

The AFC West sure seems like it’s adding a lot of firepower. Will be fun this year.

The NFL next year might be pretty lopsided in favor of the NFC West and AFC West. (Though I’m also curious what Tampa Bay will be doing now with Brady back.)

ESPN NFL reporter John Clayton has died at 67.

That’s sad news; he was a smart and insightful reporter and football analyst.

And, as mentioned in that article, he was the focus of one of my very favorite SportsCenter ads:

I was devastated to hear this.

As a PNW sports fan, he made an appearance in almost every radio show I listen to. He generally gets a 10-15 minute spot on each one. He’s a fixture up here and sports radio won’t be the same. It’ll be like eating cake without frosting. :frowning:

I’m also subscribed to his podcast. (Or I was.)

RIP Professor.

Anheuser Busch ending their sponsorship of the Commanders. Not sure if it really is a stand against Dan Snyder or if it’s just jostling and Miller/Coors will be getting the rights and it’s all about $$$ as it usually is.

Welp, sorry Cleveland fans. I always kinda want to root for the Browns, and it looked like they were building something special there. But now I’m done. Deshaun Watson is a serial sexual predator, and the Browns will give him the largest guaranteed contract in the history of the NFL. Here’s hoping he blows a knee in the first game of the season, that when he needs a massage on it, they use razors and lemon juice, and that him and perennial asshole Jimmy Haslam race each other into obscurity.

Here’s what I don’t understand. Of all the people in the world to give the largest guaranteed contract in the NFL to, it’s got to be Deshaun Watson?!

Well, the civil suits will probably outlast the contract and cost him most of, if not all or more of the money.

Here’s something interesting:

As it stands, the NFL could suspend Watson for a minimum of six games through its code of conduct policy for violations related to sexual assault. The league confirmed in a statement that any trade would have “no effect on the NFL’s ongoing and comprehensive investigation of the serious allegations against Watson. If the league’s investigation determines Watson violated the personal conduct policy, discipline may be imposed pursuant to the policy.”

If Watson is disciplined, though, it won’t cost him much financially. ESPN confirmed Watson’s new $230 million contract with Cleveland will include only $1 million in base salary for the first year. In other words, if Watson is suspended, he would lose less than $60,000 per game lost.

That the Browns even agreed to a contract structure explicitly intended to circumvent NFL enforcement only underscored their desperation further.

My first reaction is negative here but I actually haven’t kept up with the Watson situation at all and don’t really know how bad or how credible the accusations against him are. I also rarely watched Watson so I don’t have a feel for how good he actually is, either. The draft picks were too high for a player who has a black cloud hanging over his head. Also, Mayfield is going to be good long term - his bad play in both bad years correlates strongly to his level of injury. Guess I’ll do some reading.

Michigan’s David Ojabo, projected as the No. 1 outside linebacker in the class of 2022, tore his Achilles during his pro day at the university and is expected to miss about six months.

You know, if I was accused of sexual assault by one woman, as a poor man with little skill, it would probably ruin my life.

But when you’re rich, you can get away with it. 22 women have credibly accused Watson of sexual assault, and now he’s got more guaranteed money than any NFL player.

And how many people accused the Former Guy of sexual assault?

I did some reading on it and I believe the accusations are credible. SI wrote a couple pretty good articles that were very convincing. He did that stuff. As a Browns fan I feel kind of sick about it. I can’t root for this guy.

The Browns accomodating his “suspension needs” by only paying him a million in the first year of the contract was a nice touch.

Here, read this great article:

And showing once again that the NFL doesn’t give a shit about the players.

The only bright side, is maybe the Packers will have the chance to draft him now.

Well…

Matt Ryan to the Colts, which is where Baker wanted to go:

There’s reportedly a 2 second-round-pick offer for Jimmy G from somebody. Saints or Panthers maybe. Looking like Baker’s options are rapidly declining. One of those two or Seattle are the remaining wide-open spots.
