NFL Offseason Thread: Combine & Free Agency Version

You can’t argue the whole West Coast offense connection. McNabb is a perfect fit and the transition from Reid’s system would be seamless if Holmgren intends to run what he’s always run in Green Bay and Seattle. I wonder if you gave the Eagles the 39th overall pick and told them to send either McNabb or Kolb which guy the Eagles would want to ship over.

Holmgren isn’t the coach, or even the GM, so I wouldn’t make evaluations based on Holmgren’s coaching history. But McNabb is skilled enough to work in pretty much any offense I’d imagine.

Fair point, but I suspect that he’ll have a heavy hand in deciding the big picture concepts contained in the playbook. It’s like when Parcells went to Miami, you knew they would be running a 3-4.

Draft them in round 1 or don’t draft them at all.

My view is the absolute opposite. Draft one in 3-6 round every couple years and teach the hell out of them out of the spotlight for a couple years. Most will fail to blossom, (much like a first round QBs) but eventually you will get one who figures it out. Without the pressure of a first rounder you pretty much have to throw to the wolves.

Bah. You have to be something called an ESPN Insider to see the draft. I’m not, so I can’t. Who do they have the Saints taking?

Both guys agree it’s Sean Weatherspoon, OLB from Missouri.

The Browns are like the Bears when it comes to QB’s, I think. Meaning, they can’t seem to draft or sign a good one, and if and when they do, their offensive plan isn’t designed to take advantage of their offensive personnel very well…nothing ever seems to mesh.

Interesting. Last mock I saw also had them going OLB in the first round, but I think it was the guy from UNC–Sapp, maybe? They need to get better at stopping the run. Pass defense was reasonably good last year, but they gave up way too many yards on the ground.

They had a quick undersized guy in Fujita and won the Super Bowl. Seems reasonable to assume they’ll try and replace Fujita with someone similar. Getting a burly run stuffer who might struggle going backwards would up end their system. Ideally they’ll find a guy who can do both or develop into both, but Witherspoon seems to at least ensure parity to last year versus a potential clash.

While the Bears picked up little known guys like Julius Peppers and Chester Taylor; the Packers made THE move of the offseason this week. They signed:

Charles Dillon.

Yes, THE Charles Dillon.

You may be scratching your head and wondering “Who the fuck is Charles Dillon?” Well, my friends, he only had 89 receptions, 1078 yards, and 18 (that’s right 18) touchdowns [sub]in AF2[/sub].

Things just got a lot more interesting in the NFC North.

Any relation to Corey?

No, but a lot of his fans were pissed when he went electric.

Browns signed Ben Watson for 3 years/12 mil. Eh. Gotta be better than what we’ve got.

Having watched Watson on the Pats for years, he’s a somewhat frustrating player. He’ll have stretches where he catches everything thrown his way and gets open with seeming ease, then other stretches where he completely disappears. I believe that at least some of this is due to game-planning from the coaches. He’s definitely got great hands. This is an upgrade for the Browns.

The Browns need to stop adding good players! I want them to remain the divisional doormat!

Packers sign Nick Collins, S to a reported 3 year, $23.4 million dollar contract. It’s frontloaded so that he gets $14 million of it this year, which is helpful in a cap year. It averages out to about 8 million a year which is a lot, but he’s a Pro Bowl safety and it’s front loaded, so there you go.

Packers also signed Ryan Pickett, NT, to a 4 year, $28 million dollar contract, not sure how front loaded it is. He’s been a very solid NT, but he’s 30 and I’m a bit surprised by the length. Still, the Packers got a couple more of their guys signed to longer term deals, so I’m happy.

With the Watson signing, I was wondering who the starting TE on the Pats would be, and I realized they pretty much have nobody! Then I came across this article on ESPN, which describes the clusterfuck that the Pats are in at Tight End. An unusually bad situation that does not reflect well on the coaches and evaluators.

This is why just about everyone is predicting that the Bears will ship Olsen to the Pats for picks. I can’t make up my mind on how I feel about that possibility.

The Lions have one cornerback on their roster currently.
