Browns traded Alex Hall, a 4th and 5th round pick, for Sheldon Brown and Chris Gocong. I guess I like it - Brown is pretty good and would make a nice tandem with Wright. Gocong hasn’t done anything in the pros as far as I know, but I remember the draft hype.
I actually like Alex Hall a lot and thought he was developing into a pretty good pass rusher so I’m sad to see him go. Depending on the contract with Sheldon, I’m mostly happy with the deal though. I won’t be too happy with giving a 31 year old corner a huge contract, but at least we won’t go into the draft with a big hole at corner. I’d prefer to keep Hall to replace the traded Wimbley rather than take in Gocong though… I don’t even know if that’s the position he’s going to play, the vacant 3-4WOLB spot.
I have no idea what I think about this. On one hand, I’d think a physical, Pro Bowl corner in his prime would be worth more than a couple mid-round picks. He was probably the Eagles best secondary guy last year, so the defense now has a big hole to flll to replace him (Asomughaghagha?). On the other hand, it looks like this Hall guy could develop into exactly what the Eagles need most: an athletic pass rushing OLB. And he’s very good on special teams from what I read. And Gocong was basically nothing all season. He was replaced at the end of the year for being mostly ineffective.
So, a discontented 31 year old CB for a 4, 5, and an upside player in a position of need? Sure, I’ll throw in a disappointing LB and laugh all the way to the bank. Just wish I fully believed that. I kinda feel like the Eagles are overvaluing those mid round picks compared to proven, veteran players. I would think moving Brown to safety would have been a better choice. We’ll see.
Apparently there’s a huge giveaway going on in Washington where the Redskins are handing out boatloads of cash to any washed up running backs who can make the trip. What a nice gesture.
That is a shocker. I never ever expected them to deal within the division. Well, this is what the Eagles fans have been bellowing for. McNabb, almost certainly, has been the greatest Eagles quarterback of the Super Bowl era (sorry Jaws). So, I am sorry to see him go. I guess it makes football sense to get a draft pick for him before he retires and you get nothing. But, it doesn’t seem like the sort of thing you do to the greatest QB the team has ever seen. It’s not like Kolb is the second coming of Steve Young. (He’s not even Mormon!)
I was hoping that if they did trade him it would be to a team with legitimate Super Bowl hopes. I would love to see him hold up the trophy, even if it isn’t for the Eagles. In the parity of the NFL I guess any team could be a quarterback away. But, the Redskins were not especially impressive last year. In any case, it’s going to be an exciting year in the NFC East, for sure!
I am now convinced that Daniel Snyder is like Johnny Depp’s character in Once upon a time in Mexico. He must be a plant by the CIA, MLB, and NBA just to keep the NFL in constant chaos and unpredictability. The position used to be held by Al Davis, but then He went actually insane and start to focus on keeping only his own team a mess, so they brought in Snyder to churn things up a bit.
I haven’t seen anything to that effect, I assume you are just busting balls. The Bears are pretty confident in Chris Williams at LT after the way he finished the season. I’m less confident but there’s almost zero chance they are looking for a LT in FA. Hopefully I won’t have to complain about my pet peeve of reporters speculating on how a player might fit on a team and then another reporter (or Doper) relaying that as some actual “interest” or “news”.
I was damn near certain that I speculated on McNabb going to the Redskins somewhere in this thread, I was looking for it to quote as a way of pimping myself but damned if I can find it. I must be losing it!
It’s a really interesting move. Most people are killing the Redskins for the move and I just don’t agree with that. I think the picks they gave were a really fair price for McNabb and frankly I don’t think it’ll cripple them in the long term and if they want to draft a developmental guy they still can in the 3rd round (I don’t think there’'d have been a good value at the 37th pick). Shanahan has shown real talent maximizing play from his QBs and I suspect he’ll have a system that McNabb can thrive in. He’ll need to bring in a decent WR for him and all these washed up RBs won’t help much but McNabb should be happy and you have to like the odds of Snyder resigning him to an extension. McNabb will certainly be motivated to whip the Iggles twice a season.
The biggest question is what the deal will be with Campbell. Are they gonna release him? Trade him? Keep him to develop under McNabb and learn? Will they be able to ship him somewhere and get a 3rd rounder back to mitigate this loss?
Because I consider MvNabb a very good QB, I can’t fault any team for trading for him. Now I see the Redskins drafting Dez Bryant at 4, but holy crap, who knows?
I got it from the headline “Bears may have interest in Flozell Adams” at The Redzone. I didn’t actually check out the report beyond the headline, but now that you posted your pet peeve, it refences a piece at National Football Post that is little more than idle speculation. So, although it certainly was a small effort to bust balls, it also is a nigh but perfect example of what you hate too. It’s a win/win.
As far as McNabb goes, It certainly makes two games this year must see football games! Now we get to see if Kevin Kolb is a franchise QB or Derek Anderson.
Adam Caplan (I really hope I don’t have to source everything now) reported that the Redskins had dangled Haynesworth as part of the trade for McNabb. Smells a bit like a case of buyers remorse for Snyder.
Well, this trade means the Eagles are now the youngest team in the NFL. I think they have exactly one person above 30 on the entire roster, not counting kickers. So this makes for a very interesting situation for the Eagles where they will likely miss the playoffs this coming season, but be better off down the road for it. I’m glad the Eagles made a move, I wish it hadn’t been in the division.
Kolb will be a better fit in the offense and if he can continue showing as much promise as he did in limited work last season, this team will be very good, very soon. Now they really have to work on the defense, almost exclusively. For the first time I can remember, the secondary is a major concern. The linebacking group is very weak, though that’s nothing new (when was the last time the Eagles drafted a LB in the first 2 rounds? That would be Quinton Caver in 2001). I wonder how Philly fans will do rooting for a team where the upside for this season is probably barely missing the playoffs.
I wonder who gets drafted first in fantasy and who has the bigger season, McNabb or Kolb. Kolb certainly has the more potent offense around him but he’s not been tested really and McNabb is walking into a potentially horrible situation with a bad O line, bad RBs and bad WRs. Then again Shanahan almost always gets production out of his offenses.
Gotta be Kolb. He put up huge numbers in his two starts last year, and if anything, he’s a better passer in that type of offense than McNabb was. He might not be anywhere near as good over all (I’m guessing he throws more picks this coming season than McNabb threw in any season), but he’s gonna put up numbers.
So, who’s going to go after Jason Campbell? He’s a RFA, right? I can’t see anyone giving a 1st rounder for him. Can the 'Skins sign him and deal him? I could see the Panthers having some interest, based on their current situation.
