If he didn’t play into the microscope he’s under, if he didn’t crave the attention, the celebrity, and the cameras, I might begin to think about feeling bad for him.
I don’t like Manziel. He’s a entitled, egotistical prick who smarms his way through life and is in severe need of some maturity. He hasn’t grown out of being the star QB in high school, where everyone loves him, he goes out drinking with his buds and doesn’t get in trouble, and everyone lets everything slide.
I think there’s a pretty good chance this one goes meta, with more people writing and caring about articles on how crotchety sports columnists are reacting than actually caring about Johnny’s delightful finger.
Manziel is all sorts of meta for me. I get so excited to have a someone who’s so clearly an asshole to root against – a real *villain *-- and I’m so glad he’s in the league, that I wind up rooting for him. But, the whole reason I like him is that I can root *against *him. I don’t get it.
I guess I hope he just keeps doing insane, entertaining shit, and gets away with it.
My thoughts, too. I kinda hope Manziel is really good because I enjoy seeing people seethe at him. The sport needs some villains and the Patriots have become bland in that regard. (If you read reddit’s NFL sub, my own 49ers are hated and I love it.)
While you’re here, garygnu. I don’t put much stock in the preseason, especially for teams that are in contention for the Super Bowl, but the Niners dismal play (outscored 57-3 in two games) has caught my attention. Are you concerned at all? Will the return of Davis and possibly Boone make it all better?
I don’t think it’s a big deal, especially with how limited their starters play, but I think it’s definitely not a good sign. After Kaepernick’s 2 sub-200 yard games in the playoffs last year and some heavy losses on defense, I think the Niners are due for a fall, but they’re also really tough to count out.
In pro wrestling terms, that would make him a heel.
Two thoughts about last night’s nigh unwatchable game:
The defensive holding calls…oy.
Manziel needs to hold a clipboard, and the issue can be revisited during the Week 4 bye. Not that Hoyer looked good, but everyone needs to quit freaking out over the results of a couple possessions. If that had been a real game, everyone would have shrugged off the slow start, but because they’re fighting for the QB job, everyone’s like “ZOMG, HE THREW BEHIND THE RECEIVER!!!”
Rams Front Office: [flat] Oh noooooo … Gee, that’s really so … you know … bad. I mean, shoot … Sam was looking so, you know … what are we gonna, um … well, we’ll get by somehow.
Pats are extremely thin at TE, but this seems like a lopsided trade in favor of the Bucs. It does clear over $5 million in cap space, so maybe there is another move to come.
It’s not too surprising. Belichick has a history of trading away older players while they still have trade value.
Happened back in '09 to Richard Seymour, who was named a part of the Patriots 50th Anniversary team at about the same time. I believe they got a 1st round pick out of the Raiders for Seymour.
Not by any reports, but the team does have a surplus of guards, a rookie or two having shone in camp (is Jordan Devey now a starter?). Plus, it lets them keep both Connolly and Wendell.
Belichick does have a record of letting personal spite affect his personnel decisions - Ty Law, Richard Seymour, now Mankins - anybody who shows too much independence, that is. Usually the guy only has a good year or two left, granted, but it still hurts the team’s chances in January.
The telecasts for the preseason games aren’t going back and showing replays of the calls on all these new defensive holding and pass interference penalties. That can’t be a coincidence. The NFL is at the same time making a statement that you can’t play defense as a DB, but also suppressing the details so that the fans can’t actually see what bullshit they’re pulling over on us.
