At the least he could (and should) be suspended. The league has a new rule this season that exceptionally brutal/dirty hits can lead to suspension and/or ejection on the first offense.
A number of pundits are calling for suspension. He sent someone to the hospital on an unnecessary hit and got the same penalty you’d get for taunting.
I’m puzzled why he wasn’t ejected, since that’s what the rules allow for a flagrant targeting foul. Maybe they need to implement the college rule, since we can’t seem to trust the judgment of the officials in this.
And that’s the answer, isn’t it? The officials were indisputably and objectively terrible. That play comes to mind, but the bogus “no roughing the kicker because the ball was tipped by Chicago’s punt rusher’s invisible 20-inch-long fingers” call also fits the pattern.
In a way, Green Bay beat not just the Bears, but the officiating crew too.
Update: The NFL said they are “investigating the hit” and multiple sources I’ve read say it should be assumed a suspension is to follow.
Travathan said, “It wasn’t a dirty hit because I’m not a dirty player” and that he didn’t mean to cause injury. I’m calling BS on both, that was clear targeting.
I think you’re wrong. Glennon sucks ass, and Trubisky showed he’s an absolute baller in the preseason. You said “Glennon looks like a rookie”…well, why not play an actual rookie?
The days of “sitting and learning from the vet QB” (even if he’s a journeyman backup like Glennon) are over. Cut the cord, get the growing pains over with.
Mainly because the Bears schedule is a bit of a buzz-saw until the bye. No point in getting Trubisky murdered, let Glennon take those bullets. Plus the Bears have basically no WRs, so best not to let Trubisky develop any bad habits.
Let him sit in the film room and see more of the crap DCs throw at a QB in the regular season vs the preseason. It’s not about him learning from Glennon directly, but letting hit sit in the QB room and hear what works and what doesn’t.
I think he should play this year, I don’t want him going 12 months without real action, but he should wait a few more weeks.
This is silly. It was a bad hit, but this wasn’t a guy laying out for a ball and he wasn’t defenseless. Adams was a runner and he was fighting for more yards and trying to break a tackle. Trevathan’s crime was going high and leading with the helmet and a suspension may be coming, but he didn’t launch and leave his feet which is what the rule actually says when you’re talking about a runner and not a defenseless receiver.
I mean if we’re getting out the pitchforks, where’s the ire over Joe Thomas targeting Bellamy’s head on the pass over the middle? He was out cold and he certainly was defenseless.
I don’t think he has a track record; is possible he was thinking of just trying to lay a generic big hit, not causing a concussion. Regardless, Travathan used the crown of his helmet and speared like I haven’t seen in years. That method is never acceptable.
And some have said Adams’s head dipped at the last moment. So what? With his face down like it was, Travathan couldn’t adjust even if he wanted to. Ronnie Lott, a guy who went to the HOF as a huge hitter, says you have to hit a curve ball, too.
I’m curious: Do you think he deserved the penalty and deserves a suspension? Clearly he led with the crown of his helmet into the head of another player, which is a penalty on his own. And once Adam’s forward progress was stopped, he becomes defenseless.
Based on the rules, it shouldn’t have been flagged for helmet to helmet. Progress wasn’t stopped, there was no whistle, he was a runner. He did not leave his feet which is in the text of the rule.
That said, yes, it should have been flagged for spearing and within the general bounds of referee discretion it was clear unnecessary roughness. The flag came real late, so I think the refs mainly flagged it after seeing the result. No problem with that.
I’m just saying the mob mentality going on is dishonest. Bellamy got head hunted and there’s no outrage. He shouldn’t have come back into the game either, he was KOed.
I think a suspension is tricky. Repeat offenders like Burfict, Merryweather and Harrison deserve suspensions. I don’t recall Trevathan ever getting dinged for this stuff. I don’t like suspensions for first offenses, big fines yes. But, the NFL reacts to optics and public opinion so he’ll probably get sat for a game or two and I won’t freak out about it.
Just watched the hit a couple times. His feet were moving but he was stopped, wrapped up and not moving left or right, just slowly backwards. Not a runner anymore.
I don’t think you’ve paid attention, you can be suspended for just one hit now, no history necessary (this has been repeated multiple times in this thread). It’s not to your liking but this is the way it is this season. I’ll be very surprised to not see a suspension from this (though it might be appealed of course).
From where are you getting your information? Here’s the helmet to helmet rule from here.
ARTICLE 8. INITIATING CONTACT WITH THE CROWN OF THE HELMET
It is a foul if a runner or tackler initiates forcible contact by delivering a blow with the top/crown of his helmet against an opponent when both players are clearly outside the tackle box.
There is no requirement that progress has to be stopped, that there has to be a whistle, or that he left his feet. I think you got some bad information.
In addition to the helmet to helmet rule, Trevathan also violated the unnecessary roughness rule (Article 6) and the defenseless player rule (Article 7). There are rules against throwing your body at a runner whose forward progress has been stopped (which, I guess we disagree on, but I’d be willing to bet you would have been pissed if he was released, ran for more yards, and the refs gave him those yards) and “using any part of a players helmet or facemask to butt, spear, or ram an opponent violently or unnecessarily (which, I think you admit he did and was properly penalized)”
Finally, there’s the defenseless players rule, which, as I said, we disagree on. But at least we agree that Danny Trevathan committed the unnecessary roughness penalty, so we have that.
Ah, the old “someone else did it too, so when my guy does it, it shouldn’t be a big deal”. Good luck with that.
Reacts to optics? Dude, Trevathan, for no reason other than to try and put a big hit on someone, drove his helmet straight and powerfully into the helmet of another player. Those are the optics that matter. It was a cheap shot to the head and fucking knocked a guy out and sent him to the hospital. So I reiterate:
Point of the matter is that if Trevathan kept his head up like he should, he’s not hitting Adams in the head. He lowered his head to make the big hit, Adams fell into the line of fire, and now Danny T gets to watch from the sidelines for a couple weeks.
I’m not getting any google hits for Thomas v. Bellamy, got a link? There was the one pass break up, but I don’t remember anything else, especially on the Trevathan v. Adams level.
Saints defense looking good for the 2nd straight week. If the Saints defense stays good, the league better watch out! Brees + good defense = playoffs. Every time Brees has had a defense better than around #20 or so, the Saints went to the playoffs, IIRC.
