NFL Week 6

Finally my lions get a win. I was sure they were going to show us another way to lose but the bears are that damn bad. I bet a friend the lions will finish worse than 500. I was before week 3. They are 1 and 4 now. Hoping we get some good drafts next year. I’m rooting for Aaron Rodgers this year. Funny Payton Cincinnati gb and new England are all still undefeated. Anyone else?

Panthers! 5-0

WTF was that?

I can’t think of a scenario other than a defensive offsides where that play works.

Maybe you get the other team to burn a timeout when they see you doing something weird? But if that doesn’t work and they don’t jump, just take the delay and punt.

Seriously, what the fuck?

The Chargers are 2 and 4. As someone who doesn’t give a shit whether they leave San Diego or not, this makes me happy.

So serious rules question on that play (I assume we’re talking about the Colts fake punt candidate for ‘worst football play of the season’ ). If the defense had lined up offside and the ball was snapped, would that be offsetting penalties, since the offensive formation was illegal? Or would one of them somehow take precedence?

Would it be different if the defense was lined up offside and one of the offensive players stood up from a set position, reacting to the offside (but remember, the offensive person would not be a lineman, but a backfield player)?

Stupid self-destructive Seahawks. Someone needs to remind Seattle that a football game is 60 minutes, not 48. (What is this, the NBA? Could they be missing the Sonics that badly?)

Still, grats to the Cats for owning the NFC South.

Preach it!

I haven’t watched a single football game this year, but i like to keep an eye on the Chargers results and feel a little buzz of happiness whenever they lose.

I don’t really care whether they stay or go, but i am adamantly opposed to the city spending hundreds of millions of dollars to keep them, and i get fucking sick of team supporters—many of whom are the sort of people who complain about government taxing and spending—whining that the city should hand over massive amounts of cash for a new stadium.

Yesterday afternoon, one of my neighbors in our condo complex was watching the game. I didn’t even need to check the internet to see how the game was going, because his periodic yelling of “Are you fucking kidding me?” came faintly but clearly to my ears, and his loud wail of dismay when the Chargers failed on 4th down at the end of the game told me all i needed to know.

Nah, not the NBA. High school, where the quarters are 12 minutes each.

And the Broncos win another game they probably shouldn’t have. While Manning is clearly having issues, the whole offense hasn’t looked great and it’s the defense keeping them (and even winning) these games. Just look at the Browns drive in overtime after the interception. That should have been an easy gain for a field goal and the win. Instead, lots of pressure on McCown and the Broncos defense drives back the Browns for something like 15 yards. Denver can win the AFC West, but I don’t have much hope right now when it comes to the playoffs.

Do we know what they *tried *to do? Apparently, the coach said “Why did you snap the ball?” when the snapper came back to the sideline  What was he supposed to have done, what was *they *supposed to have done?

I think the intent was pretty obvious: 1. if the defense was lined up offside or jumps offside, or had too many men on the field, snap the ball and take the penalty for a first down. 2. If the defense responds perfectly, just let the play clock run out, give up five yards on delay of game penalty and then conventionally punt the ball on the 4th and 8.

The coach implied they weren’t really trying for the other options, but they do exist: 3a. If the defense puts only one or two people over the ball, snap and run to try and get three yards (should have a reasonable chance of success going two on two and only needed a couple yards); and 3b. If the defense doesn’t put more than 5 or 6 people across from the mass of offense, then snap the ball and immediately throw a screen pass over there; a screen pass with 7 -8 tight blockers for 5 -6 defenders should have a good chance too. Maybe obviously, options 3 should be done quickly before the defense has a chance to figure things out.

So, not a completely crazy idea, except there were two major failures:
I. The mass lined up too far off the line of scrimmage, so it was an illegal formation.
II. The ‘center’ snapped the ball when the defense was perfectly set.

Blame the ‘center’ for II, but poor coaching to have the players in an illegal formation.

But again, I’m wondering what would be the call if the Patriots had lined up in the neutral zone. Would the penalties offset, or does something more complicated happen?

Thank you, Quercus.

It’s nice to know, as a 49er fan going into Thursday Night, that even a 4th Quarter Seahawks lead is nothing to be down about.

In the NFL, defenses almost never jump offside on fourth down, but that doesn’t stop coaches from trying it like they were in Pop Warner. QB’s keep trying hard counts to make them jump on fourth down, but when did you ever see it work? (I’ve heard Boomer Esiason comment about how he always felt like a dork doing it, knowing it wasn’t going to work). Weird formations don’t draw defenses either. But they just keep trying.

I’ve been trying to think of a dumber play in NFL history, but nope - that was it.

I’ve seen it work at least 3 or 4 times. It helps when it’s a plausible situation like a 4th and inches and you line up like you’re going to do a QB sneak. It’s essentially free, so worth a shot in some situations.

Since Atlanta lost their 6th game before New England and Carolina won their fifth game, does it still count as having six teams at 5-0 to start the season? Because it is true that six teams did start 5-0, they just weren’t all 5-0 at the same time :D.

In theory, if you had Barry Sanders or Adrian Peterson with a blocker against only 2 guys on the whole side of the field, it might work well. Trying it with 150 pound Wide Receiver number 6, is asinine.

As it stands, the 3 teams that are now 6-0 have this weekend off. So we shall see on Sunday whether NE & Carolina can keep pace with them. I would say Calolina probably, NE maybe not.
