NFL - why no extra week?

During this whole business with the World Trade Center, I kept reading about the various ways in which the NFL might re-work their schedule to have both a complete 16-game season and a full slate of playoffs. All the time, I was wondering “Why don’t they just have a one-week break between the championship games and the Super Bowl instead of the usual two-week break?”

Recently, I discovered that this year’s schedule actually eliminated the extra week. Anyone know why?

No special reason, it’s just the way that the schedule worked out. They were planning on going to the week break again next year. They really did pick the wrong year to do that though, didn’t they?

I think the NFL didn’t like playing Labor Day weekend, so they decided to wait a week to start.
