NHL: December 2010

In that case, forget it Jake. It’s the New York Rangers.

Jagr isn’t retired from hockey yet is he? I thought he was still playing in Europe or Russia specifically.

No – he’s still playing, just not in the NHL. I believe in he’s playing for the KHL.

Yup. Avangard Omsk in the KHL, alongside a couple other former NHLers like ex-Penguin/Devil/Maple Leaf-for-a-hot-second Martin Skoula.

He also played in the Winter Olympics in Vancouver for his native Czech Republic, and is really only remembered for getting crushed on a huge open ice hit by Ovechkin.

Crunching a few numbers, it’s safe to say that this is a lost season for the Devils.

Since the lockout the 8th seed in the EC has averaged 91.8 points (88, 93, 94, 92, 92). The Devils theoretically need 74 more points to eke in as the 8th seed… requiring them to earn 70% of their remaining points.

They’d need a record something along the lines of 33-12-8 over their remaining 53 games, or, put another way, they’d need to match the Penguins’ nearly unsustainable pace through the first third of the season for the next 2/3… and there are absolutely no indications that the team as currently constituted can achieve such a feat.

Let the cleansing begin: Brian Rolston placed on waivers.

Well, the Penguins’ streak is over, as they fall to the Flyers 3-2 in Philly.

Crosby still had two assists though, so his point streak is still alive.

Yay Lidstrom got his first career hat trick at age 40.

I always figured if the kid stuck with it he might make something of himself someday

Well that and the giant mullet.
Did anyone watch “24/7 – Road to the Winter Classic” on HBO last night? (Pens, Caps fans probably did, I would imagine). I can’t wait for the next episode – I hope they release it on DVD!

There’s been an significant amount of hand-wringing over the Phaneuf trade here in Calgary in the past few days with him returning to town, with the Calgary mediainsisting that Sutter admit the Flames got taken. I guess I can see their point that they could have gotten more for Phaneuf but in terms of actual talent, the Flames have to have come out ahead. Giving him away for nothing would almost have accomplished that. The Calgary media has never seemed to see get past that initial burst of talent to see that he’s quite frankly a terrible defenceman.

The Coyotes needed an emergency backup goalie tonight against the Rangers at MSG. Ilya Bryzgalov had the flu, so regular backup Jason LaBarbera started, with Tom Fenton, whose day job is in the community relations department at Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY, sitting on the bench.

Fenton’s career record at American International College is in the link in the above paragraph. It’s probably a good thing that LaBarbera didn’t get hurt.

I am watching the Blue Jackets/Stars game on NHL gamecenter, watching the Fox Sports Ohio feed for the first period. There was a Jeep ad superimposed on the glass behind one of the goals for the first few minutes of the first period. Please tell me this is not something the regional sports networks that cover the NHL are considering.

Comcast network affiliates have been doing it all year. For the entire game.

The Canes survive a 6-3 to beat the Ducks 4-2. Eric Staal gets a natural hat trick.

Do you have a picture of it?

I’m watching the Blackhawks/Kings game on NHL Network and WGN Chicago also has superimposed ads on the glass behind the goal.

This trend SUCKS!

I have found it impossible to access the NHL page at the Sports Illustrated website. Anyone else having the same problem? I has been about 3 days since I could last access it and I can’t find anywhere to report problems.

I just checked, Ike and it’s giving me a blank page with the SI grey background. Same when I click on NBA and College Football, so I assume most of the site is affected. The home page also looks like shit on my browser (Firefox).

There’s a Contact Us link at the bottom of the page http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/about_us/feedback/?eref=sihp

The Habs are in a rough stretch of losing close games, though they beat Boston a couple of nights ago. I’d be much happier if they could at least drag it out to overtime and get some points! I hope the rest of this road trip gets better, since they lost last night in the first game, otherwise the rest of December will be long!

I noticed this on a Caps home game a week or so ago. Not that it helped a lot but I noticed that the logo only appeared when they were using the center ice camera. The shots using the ice level corner cameras shots didn’t show the logo.

I wouldn’t worry about them losing close games. That kind of thing evens out over the course of the season. If they were getting beat 7-2 every night, then that would be a problem.

But yeah, getting some of the cheat points for OT or a shootout would help. That’s what killed their playoff chances in '07–when they won a close one, usually it was OT or a shootout, but if they lost, it was generally in regulation.

Woot! Stars are in first place in the west!
