NHL: December 2010

Is it January yet? :frowning:

Fun stat for the Winter Classic. Both Ovechkin and Crosby entered the league at the same time. They both have 571 points going into the game.

If Howard goes down with an injury, he could do it. Otherwise it’s doubtful. Ozzie doesn’t seem like the type to play just to chase a record. His contract is up this season, and he seems to be mulling retirement. That said, I’m not sure how deep the Wings are with goalie prospects and they might want to keep him as a backup if he’s cheap enough.

Maxim Lapierre traded to Anaheim for Brett Festerling and a draft pick. Festerling will report to Hamilton.

The cognoscenti are registering their horror on the Habs’ Facebook page. My general reaction is…meh.

I like Lapierre :frowning: Sad to see him go - I think there are more serious issues to address than his playing right now.
I assume a few people are following the WJHC? Canada just lost to Sweden in overtime, meaning Sweden goes on to the Semis and Canada has to play a quarter-final game. I haven’t been able to see most of the tournament (damn Christmas and sister’s wedding!!) but I’m not too concerned…Go Canada Go!

League changes Winter Classic start time to 8 ET

Saw the Leafs lose to the Blue Jackets 3-2 last night, in a day of drunkenness and debauchery. (When did strip clubs in Ontario become outright whorehouses?)

Walking out of the ACC, my buddy and I felt there wsa about a 50-50 chance Ron Wilson would be fired before the Leafs played another game.

I’m not saying this is a good team - they aren’t. In particular they don’t really have a good goalie and have no center who’d make the second line on any other team I can think of. But they’re not completely devoid of talent; they have a few wingers who can score and a number of solid NHL defencemen. But I’ll tell you, I haven’t personally seen an effort that bad in a game I actually attended - well, ever. The Leafs poured it on in the first period and left it with a deserved 2-1 lead, and then for forty consecutive minutes exerted less effort than we did running to catch the bus after the game. It was a disgraceful effort, and is at least the twenty-fifth time this year the team has, for at least one full period of a game, shown absolutely no hustle or heart at all. It’s inexcusable, and who do you blame if not the coach?

Habs win 3-2 in overtime against Florida, with the new guy James Wisniewski as the star with two goals, including the overtime winner, and assisting on the other.

Thus, they now limp home after a 2-5 road trip, in which they gave up their division lead and now sit in eighth in the conference, albeit six points up on ninth-place Carolina, and still only one point behind the Bruins for the division lead.

Jordan Staal will return for tonight’s game

This year couldn’t have come off to a better start.
