How the hell is any team in the East going to beat that in the playoffs? Utter destruction. Yea, Iggy looked lost and confused on the Pens, but that’s because Disco Dan forced him into a North/South game on the LW. He’s going to thrive with Krejci and their system.
Only teams that are an issue, I guess, are the speed demon teams: Islanders, Leafs. But still!
Probably had more to do with the competition. Chelios and Niedermayer are both worthy first ballot HoFers, and Shanahan should have gotten in last year over Bure or Sundin.
As were the new division names. The old Northeast is now the Atlantic because there’s 2 out of 8 teams that are close to the ocean, while the old Atlantic is now the Metropolitan Division because… well… actually, I have no fucking idea. It’s got 4 teams on the ocean, and 2 that are really, really close, plus there’s historical precedent - but I guess Gary wanted to have 3 geographically named divisions and 1 whackadoodle WhatTheFuckery division so nobody gets their hopes up that the NHL might be “going mainstream” and acting like an actual professional sport.
What’s more appropriate for a game that fetishizes history, physicality, and Manliness then the Metropolitan Division? You know, swanky cocktails and purple crushed velvet lounges. Or even better, what roles off the tongue right away: The Metrosexual Division.
Just think, if the Pens win the division next year (or the Devils/Flyers/Capitols/Etc) they’ll get a shiny new banner that says “Metropolitan Division Winner” - doesn’t that just scream hockey, as licensed by Marvel Entertainment?
My big problem with the Devils is how many 1-way contracts they have signed, and not allowing youngsters the opportunity to crack the lineup IE Zidlicky being re-signed really pissed me off.
As for Alfredsson to Detroit, Detroit’s main competition this season will be from Boston. It’s not like Detroit has to play St. Louis, Chicago, Nashville over and over as in the past. They aren’t exactly a longshot to play in the conference final.
