NHL: April 2013

The Dallas Stars are packing it in for the year, trading Jagr to the Bruins and Derek Roy to the Canucks.

Story

There will be some separation in the Western Conference.

It’s a bit frustrating watching the Wings do…nothing. Not that I necessarily disagree, but it is frustrating. Holland is one hard-line stubborn negotiator. In the off season with Sutter for salary, and now with Bouwmeester for a trade. He just decides the highest offer he will give, and doesn’t budge. They are in a wierd mode. They do have a lot of potential talent-in-waiting. Not to mention the non-standard talent acquisitions like Brunner(who started on fire and trailed off big time) and DeKeyser (who is supposed to get a chance in the lineup real soon)
It is smart in the long run, always choosing for value, and very successful history has proven. But it seems pretty clear there is no urgency to make something happen this year, they’ll just do what they do, precarious standings be damned.

Well, the streak was fun while it lasted. But did we have to get our asses kicked? :frowning:

Crosby - heal fast!

I LOVE the GMs in the Atlantic!

Holmgren trades Bobrovsky to Columbus, who makes him their starter, and then a year later trades for his back up, Steve Mason.

Sather, whose team is last in the league in goals for, trades for Ryan Clowe, a guy with no goals this year, to address the loss of bottom 6 grit like Brandon Prust, and then trades Gaborik to Columbus for some bottom 6 grit players. To make matters better, next year Columbus will be in the same division and could potentially ice half of last year’s Rangers team against them. That’s a lot of ghosts.

Good old Shero loaded up on the position he clearly needed the most, forward.

Lamoriello did what Lamoriello always does and brought in an old guy who used to play for the Devils.

Man, it’s pretty bad when Garth Snow comes across as the smartest GM in the room…

Philly fans are going to love Steve Mason. Seriously, the guy has matured and is improving under the tutelage of Ian Clark. He needs playing time. Which Philly is going to give him when they, supposedly buy out Bryz this summer. Still, wrong place for a goalie to get his confidence back.

Don’t discount the players NYR got from Columbus. Moore needed a new start, nothing exactly bad but he just never clicked. Dorsett is a leader in the making, and his loss hurts. Brassard, ehh. Sitting on the cusp of breaking out too long. Could be a real surprise. I am not overly thrilled with the return. Maybe he works out better away from Torts.

Not discounting them, just pointing out the oddness of the situation.

Last year the Rangers were first in the East and made it to the ECF with their roster. The consensus among fans and the FO seemed to be that they needed a little less “grit” and more scoring, so they largely sacrificed one for the other by trading some for Rick Nash and losing some to free agency.

Now, 30 some-odd games later they’re last in the league in scoring, a bubble playoff team and they’ve dumped their best pure scorer for more “grit” players and are, essentially, right back to where they started.

The best player they got in return is, I agree, Dorsett, but he’s out with a broken clavicle. Really the best thing the Rangers get is some cap breathing room because they’ve got a lot of RFAs they need to sign after this season.

Barring unforeseen events, the Wings aren’t going to win the cup this year. They just aren’t. Might not even make the playoffs. Kenny Holland seemed to be aware of that in the long offseason. What’s the point of trading picks and prospects for a rental player that gets you nowhere? Better to make no moves and see what you can get in free agency to complement a hopefully healthy team. They’ll have cap room, and the having a new CBA should give Detroit an advantage. They’ve been very good about figuring the ins and outs before anyone else in the past. Detroit was signing players to front loaded, long term deals before it was cool.

You know, it’s hard to have a lot of sympathy for Wings fans. Wow, your team did nothing at the trade deadline? Much like every year. Yet somehow they will have a 38th round draft pick from Brazil turn out to be the next All-Star/Hall of Famer.

Soulmurk, you know if the Rangers need to dump some more salary over the summer, they are welcome to send Dorsett back. They could trade Delisle again.

Just a comment on the toughness of some of the NHL players - and I’m sure all teams have similar example. Last night a player took a puck to the crotch, literally crawled to the bench and five minutes later was back on the ice.

Interesting, the Rolling Stones are playing at the United Center in Chicago on May 28 and May 31. The May 31 show was just added. Would the Stones have to tear down their stage to squeeze in a possible Blackhawks playoff game during that time or are we going to see some interesting scheduling in a potential Western Conference playoff matchup?

Stupid Ducks. They’re gonna be the Hawks downfall. Jerks.

Tanner Glass = Classy
Switches jersey number for newly acquired Brenden Morrow and then offers to pay the cost of his fans who have his jersey and want to update to his new number.

That is very cool.

The kid got his chance, and looked solid. He isn’t ever going to be the power play point man we need, But we need solid D too, and he certainly didn’t look out of place at all in an NHL lineup.

Ten games to go - if you take making up five standings points as the practical limit there are still three teams in the east and five in the west in reach of the playoffs. Should be an exciting few weeks.

On a delayed penalty, if the team with the puck scores, no power play ensues. Does the offending player get the PIM added to their stats? Does the answer change if the penalty is against the bench?

In last night’s Caps-Lightening game, in the closing seconds a player on the TB bench extended his stick as a Caps player went by on a clean breakaway to the empty net. The ref signaled the penalty; the goal was still scored. In the box score on NHL.COM no penalty is listed.

In that case, it was an automatic goal; Ovie didn’t even have to put the goal in the net. See rule 56.7:

I’m honestly not sure how it effects player stats, though.

And hell, with the way Ovechkin has been shooting at empty nets this season, that player was almost certainly better off taking his chances without interfering…

I’ve been waiting all season to wish a big ol’ F U to Justin Schultz, and tonight I finally get my chance, as the Ducks play the Oilers for the first time all year. This shortened season has certainly had its share of odd scheduling quirks - the Ducks just finished a 3 game mini-series against Dallas, they had 3 in a row against Phoenix earlier, and they’ll be in Edmonton on back-to-back nights in a couple weeks.

Good new: Pens clinch playoff spot! Bad news: James Neal is out with a concussion. (No discipline on the hit, either. blameMattCooke)
