NHL: January 2011

In a move that just screams “desperation”, Ottawa tried starting AHLer Mike Brodeur against the Habs last night. As should surprise no one, he was a total disaster, allowed 4 goals on 15 shots before being pulled.

This team has been done for months now. The scary thing is that the team just doesn’t have the prospects to turn this around over the next couple of years.

Evgeni Nabokov gets claimed by the Islanders and now there are rumors he won’t report? Is he determined to help the Red Wings exit the playoffs in the first round?

So far as I’ve heard, the reason Nabokov wanted to come back was to get back into the NHL and improve his standing with regards to his goaltending. That won’t happen with the Islanders. I don’t think there is a goalie in the NHL that could save that team, so it might not be a bad idea on his part. If he is refusing to play (which was the word during the Red Wings game today), the Islanders can either suspend him without pay for the rest of the season or put him back on waivers and he gets picked up by another team. This doesn’t mean that no other team wanted to claim him. The Isles were just the lowest in the standings. There were rumors that the Kings and the Sharks wanted him as well. Guess that whole “unheralded goalie” thing isn’t working out as well as hoped for San Jose.

What would the Kings do with him? Their goaltending isn’t their problem, they just can’t score goals or win any goal reviews :stuck_out_tongue:

I can see why splitting time with Dipietro isn’t an appealing way to spend the season in obscurity.

I was thinking another Western Conference team like the Blues or the Avalanche might be a likely place.

Well, it’s definite: Crosby’s out of the All-Star Game (Malkin’s a maybe)

Looks like another ugly loss by the Atlanta Thrashers today, they’re losing 0-5 to Tampa. Too bad, I wanted to see this team do well and I think they’ve got the talent to do so.

Yep. Nabokov is staying home.

Never mind – wrong thread!

What a horrible loss by the Stars to the Canucks last night. They got destroyed 7-1 and it wasn’t that close. To make things worse, Jamie Benn left with an ‘undisclosed’ injury. The Stars need to regroup and quickly. If this team is only capable of going one round in the playoffs, then they’re going to have to think about trading Brad Richards before the deadline.

Whoa, deep breath there cowboy. 2 bad games isn’t worth drastic action at this point. Remember after the great start, 4-0-0, they lost four of the next five. They got the ship back on course and they will again. While I’d hate for the team to lose Richards and get nothing in return, I think that the Stars would be writing off any playoff success if they trade him.

If it’s any consolation, Devils fans are pulling for you guys to make it through the first round… we want that second round pick for Langenbrunner!

Dude, they lost to the Canucks! There is no shame in that. My Canucks are a team of awesome this year.

They were wise to pull their goalie and put in a former Canuck (Raycroft). Should have done that a lot sooner though and the score might have been closer.

I’m looking forward to the Dallas rematch on Feb 1st!

Happy 50th birthday Wayne.

That’s all.

A nice schedule in the NHL tonight.

Dallas Stars need to beat the pants off the Edmonton Oilers.

Nashville Predators cold streak could end against the Vancouver Canucks.

The suddenly hot New Jersey Devils against Detroit. That would be a nice win for the Devils.

The frozen cold Atlanta Thrashers can snap out of their streak by beating the Washington Capitals.

Even the Calgary Flames can help their playoff attempt by beating the St. Louis Blues.

Then, we have to wait out All Star Weekend.

Well that was kind of interesting. I’m glad the Sedins are against each other but I thought there would be more splitting of teammates. Though I must say I can’t wait to see what a line of St. Louis, Richards and Eriksson can do.

And fuck me, but Phil Kessel gets a car for having the worst hair in pro sports?

I thought the fantasy draft was fun. Did you catch Ovie taking a pic of Phil Kessel sitting by himself? I was laughing my butt off. We are going to both the Skills Competition and the All-Star Game and I am so psyched!!! I’m so proud of Jeff Skinner - youngest player ever in any professional sports All-Star team. This weekend is going to be su much fun!

See ya there!

No he gets a car as compensation for having to play for the Leafs. And the worst hair in pro sports (or at least hockey, and now that Hartnell has gotten a hair cut) goes to Roberto Luongo. Dude must go through a bottle of hair gel a week. It’s disgusting.

I’m looking forward to watching the events this weekend. Sure, it’s meaningless, but it’s also pretty fun and the players seem to be having fun with it too.

I don’t know why it surprised me, but to see that TSN and James Duthie were the official announcers/hosts made me smile. He’s not even that great a host, but Duthie cracks me up. Does TSN have that role for the whole weekend, or will other networks be doing various segments?

I don’t know – Mike Green needs to ditch the fauxhawk. NO ONE can rock THAT look. (It looks like Mama Ovie cut her son’s hair again, too. He looks a lot better)

So, Team Staal, or Team Lidstrom?

With all the hype of the all star game, I realized I don’t really have a rooting interest. I’ll watch since nothing else is going on. I don’t like the Red Wings, but is that any reason to want Lidstrom to lose? Oh well, it is better than the Pro Bowl.
