NHL: March 2011

Just how serious is Manny Malhotras’ eye injury? Anyone know?

It sounds bad, doesn’t it? Eye surgery can’t be good news! For his sake, I hope it’s not too bad - I hate seeing injuries like this.

Interestingly, it looks like Daymond Langkow could be back playing for the Flames soon. He’s been out since last year when a team mate’s shot hit him in the base of the neck, fracturing a vertebrae. He’s had weakness and numbness problems, but it looks like things are working out for him. I’m not really a Flames fan, but that was a damn scary accident, and I’m glad Langkow seems to have recovered from the injury.

HabDogs@Wild tonight at 6pm (weird time!). Gill is back in, but Halpern and Plekanecs are still out, so it’s still largely an AHL lineup.

Matt Cooke strikes again.

That was intentional. Bye Bye.

Let’s see if Not-Gretzky still wants teams to get fined for their idiot goons.

Yes, and I’m pissed. Just because I’m a Pens fan doesn’t mean I like the guy’s playing style.

“Not-Gretzky” can afford it. And he’s admitted as much that he would have to pay a fine. But nice dig at one of the greatest hockey players in the history of the NHL. (BTW, he and Ray Shero HAVE stated that they are VERY unhappy with Cooke’s style – I wouldn’t want to be around for the fall out) I like Cookie, he’s a good player – he doesn’t need to keep up the dirty hits.

I gotta say, it was almost worth the loss to see Kronwall shoveling Eaves over to the bench. Funniest damn thing I’ve seen in a hockey game in a while. I love Eaves’s WTF look over his shoulder at :09.

FTR he was OK later.

That happened to a Bruin once. Chara basically threw him back to the bench. I wish I could find a video of it; it was hilarious.

If they don’t like his style why do they play him?

If Cooke was on another team and hit Crosby like that, the NHL would put Cooke in jail and throw away the key.

This. It smacks of hypocrisy to call out cheap shots and employ the ultimate cheap shot artist. If Ray Shero dislikes him so much, why not make him a healthy scratch? Buy out his contract? Even Steve Downie, whom I loathe with a passion, seems to have finally learned his lesson from a string of cheap shots. I don’t see this with Cooke. Having him on your team is an implicit endorsement of what he does.

Thanks! Can’t take credit for it, though. Anthony Cumia came up with that one after the Islanders line brawl. I simply found it amusing.
…another Antonio, I swear…

Sean Avery made a crude comment and the Stars got rid of him right away. What Cooke does is far, far worse but the Pens keep playing him.

That I can’t tell you. We’ll just have to wait and see. (As I’ve said, I like the guy – off of the ice, he’s terrific, and when he’s not pulling dirty hits, he’s a great player.)

Everyone keeps saying that, and yet nothing was done with Steckel or Hedman.

PK with a hat trick as the Habs are laying an absolute smiting on the Wild.

The hits on Crosby were not done with intent to injure. And not by well known cheap shot artists.

Neither of those hits were at all “like that.”

I wouldn’t worry, the “Wheel of Justice” results for this hit were that it was just a “hockey play”:

I’m anxiously awaiting the publicly expressed verbal outrage by not-at-all hypocritical Mario Lemieux, though.

Nice to know Cooke is a nice guy off the ice, he should spend quite a long time off the ice very soon.

That was fun.

PK Subban; so disrespectful of the other team, scoring a hat trick and getting one assist like that! Don Cherry might just have an aneurysm!

Ryan White: Gordie Howe Hat Trick plus an extra assist for the fun of it.

Benoit Pouliot: 3 assists against the team that drafted him.

Alex Auld: allowed only one goal on a penalty shot (which I think was questionable, since I could have sworn the puck was under Picard’s leg, not hand, but whatever!) and blocked 30 shots on the night. One assist as well!

Cammalleri, Wisniewski with 2 points, three assists for Desharnais, a goal for Pyatt , Moen and AK46…!

Such an entertaining game! Jacques Martin was even smiling behind the bench!

I felt bad for old friend Jose Theodore, though. Yeah, he stunk at the end of his time in Montreal and it was time for him to go, but for the most part the Habs were a better team for him being in net.

Yeah, he was one game away from all but winning a Stanley Cup with Ottawa, but the first time I saw that asshole smile was when Montreal won their season opener in OT against Toronto last year.
