Team Canada pounded Sweden 10-1 yesterday in sledge hockey, and face Norway tomorrow in the last round-robin game. Go Canada Go!
The Habs have pulled to within 3 points of Ottawa, who play Toronto tonight. I REALLY don’t want to cheer for Toronto, but if it gives the Habs a chance to move up; well, the enemy of my enemy is my friend and all that.
And Henrik Sedin is now the Vancouver Canucks all time assist leader, passing Trevor Linden last night.
Well great weekend for the Wolverines
But Back to my Wings. Well, they are in the 8th spot again, but damn is tonight’s game at Calgary huge. At least they are finally doing what I hoped for a few weeks ago. Guys setting up between the circles sniping for goals.
Six in a row, and couldn’t have come at a better time. Felt dirty cheering for Toronto last night, but with their win over Ottawa, we’re only a point behind the Sens, and only four back of the Sabres for the division lead.
Now we’re off until Saturday, when we play the Leafs.
Steve Downie needs to lose his right to play in the NHL. The sooner the better.
The NHL also needs to replace Colin Campbell ASAP. Seriously, 2 games to Ovechkin for that bush league move is embarrassing.
As much of an asshole as Ovechkin is (on and OFF the ice), Downie makes him look like a Care Bear:
Don’t get me wrong – Ovechkin’s a complete tool and he definitely got off lightly. But he doesn’t strike me as being psychotic.
ETA: And before anyone brings it up, yes, I am a Pens fan, and yes, I DO think Matt Cooke should have been suspended. However, in that case, at least Cooke owned up to what he did – but it’s not like he could suspend himself. He didn’t go whining about how he didn’t hurt Savard – the ice did it:
“Yes, Your Honor, I did indeed fire shoot him. But it wasn’t me who killed him – the bullet killed him.”
Down in the American League, the Binghamton Senators goalie Chris Holt became the 10th goalie in AHL history to score a goal. He shot the puck into the empty net with the opposing goalie pulled for an extra attacker.
Has a goalie ever scored a goal when the opposing goalie was still on the ice? (Actual question, not diminishing Holt’s accomplishment.)
And Detroit, a team fighting to hold on to a playoff spot, comes away with a single point from Edmonton, a team looking forward to this years draft. If they don’t manage to get two points in Vancouver tonight, they may as well call it a day. There is no reason not to get two points against a team that has nothing better to do than play spoiler for bubble teams especially for as talented and now healthy as Detroit is.
Not in the NHL, that I could find.
I caught the end of that game. I actually thought to myself “if any team can tie it up, it would be Detroit”, and next thing you know, the puck is in the net as the buzzer goes. Too bad they couldn’t get the win in OT/SO, but it was a fun game. The Oiler’s goalie got his first NHL win, which I suppose is nice to see.
Sigh… I stopped watching hockey again. How are the Kings doing?
I think I read somewhere that it happened once; it may have been in a pro league over in Britain. I don’t remember the details, but what I think happened was the goalie shot the puck, it caromed off of a defender and made it past the startled goalie.
The Kings are sitting 6th in the Western Conference, tied with Nashville, and only one point back of the Avalanche for fifth. They’re looking good for their first playoff birth since '02.
Yes!! Michigan, having a complete disaster of a season, went into the CCHA tournament as the seventh seed, missing their best Defensemen and starting goalie and won the CCHA!
The lowest seed ever to win and the one way they had a chance of continuing their streak of making the NCAA tourny, It’s a great day.
Now if only my Wings would get their shit together,
They’re back…the fairweather Coyotes fans, that is.
For some reason, during an intermission of the Blackhawks/Coyotes game tonight, the camera spent a long time showing fans at one of the concession stands inside the concourse. Now, I expect to see some Hawks jerseys at a Yotes/Hawks game since there are a lot of Chicago transplants here, especially during spring training. But, I saw quite a few different jerseys being worn. Who in their right mind thinks, “Let’s go to the Coyotes game tonight, but I need to put my Bruins jersey on?”
Habs lost to Toronto (WTF?!), but at least it was a shootout and they got one point out of it. I think Brian Gionta was the only guy to actually show up for this game. They play Ottawa on Monday - winner gets 5th place in the East, loser gets 6th or 7th (depending on which one it is).
I want Cammy back.
So the winner gets to play New Jersey/Pittsburgh in the playoffs, while the loser draws Buffalo? Fifth is all yours, guys.
The Leafs/Habs game last night had all the excitement of watching linoleum curl.
Teemu Selanne recorded goal number 600 in his magnificent career, as the Ducks downed the Avalanche 5-2, in Anaheim.
And the 'Yotes are now in first place in the entire Western Conference, well, sort of. Phoenix has one more win then Chicago, though the Blackhawks have two games in hand. The lowly Oilers helped them out, spanking the Sharks 5-1(!)
That injury to Daymond Langkow is kind of freaking me out. I made the mistake of clicking on the video on the CBC article…it sounds like he’s going to be ok, but what a freak series of events to lead to such a potentially damaging injury!
I wish I could catch more games from the Western conference. Sounds like today had some interesting hockey…all outside my region.
