I was wondering if anyone has examples of iphone or other pda phone applications that are less mainstream. I think it is interesting to see different creative ways people come up with to use their handsets. They say there are thousands of iphone apps, but you won’t get to all of them browsing through categories, or top 25, etc.
I work in film/video, so some examples I am familiar with are timecode calculators, slates, on-set logging. There is one for $99 that will control a protools setup remotely so an engineer can adjust the levels on the mixer in the control room while he is sitting the in studio behind the drums.
What are some other apps that were created to suit the needs of a particular profession, hobby, or interest that don’t necessarily fit the browse categories, or that you might not see if you weren’t searching for it?
There is the Helios Sun Position Calculator.
At $29 expensive for an iPhone app and definitely a niche thing but for those who need such a thing (photographers for instance) they are in love with it.
There are also a variety of apps for pilots that seem pretty cool. Here are some.
I met someone who is designing a disaster response app for the iPhone. Basically, civil response authorities push missions to disaster teams by the iPhone. The teams go do missions, like assess the condition of a bridge or levy, and the iPhone transmits it back to HQ. Then teams can see what missions have been accomplished and what they need to do next.
Sorry, can’t remember the name of the company.
Well, there are a number of specialized construction calculators out there: do math in feet, inches, and fractions of an inch, calculate areas, roof angles, rise and run, etc. This is significantly more difficult in those countries still clinging to inches and feet in the construction trades (as Canada does). And that sun-position calculator look like it does about half of what I need for solar-energy calculations…
