Does anyone know if episodes of Night Flight are available on tape, either on bootlegs sold at conventions or sold by the people who still own the rights to that show? Might it still be on somewhere, far away late at night?
Don’t know about buying the show…probably not, because I don’t think they owned what they showed. But it was a great montage of the 80’s. I remember spending many nights watching.
Many comments about the show from the JTS site…
Try doing a search on Google. There is one group, alt.video.tape-trading, that is frequented by collectors and traders of obscure TV shows and movies. I managed to find a semi-complete collection of Count Gore De Vol’s local late-night horror show from a fellow on there, so chances are someone’s gotta have some episodes of Night Flight.
Brings back memories! I loved how they mixed in music videos and short films in between the movies. Night Flight was my first exposure to the music of Frank Zappa, Sonic Youth, and Bad Brains, as well as countless exploitation/cult films.
I used to have some of Night Flight on video, taped off USA Network (I think), but that was long ago erased, unfortunately. A few months back I was watching some old movie I’d taped in the 90s, and after it was about 15 minutes of an old Night Flight, including that bizarre Art of Noise video where they’re destroying a piano. It reminded me how completely WEIRD that show was. You never knew what you were going to see until it was on . . . actually, sometimes even THEN you still didn’t know what you were seeing. Obscure short films, weird European animation, and low budget horror/SF. (Anybody remember “I Was a Zombie for the FBI”?)
Another thing I liked about it was the fact that there was no on-air host to explain everything; it was like watching some weird random transmission from the collective consciousness of pop culture.

That was an awesome show. I’ll bet if I looked I still have some on…beta!
I remember partying all night with Nightflight on in the background. It was the only place you could see a Bob Marley, Kate Bush or Rory Gallagher concert. It was a great relief from MTV.
Didn’t they have a cartoon that was very similar to Beavis and Butthead? Anybody remember the name?
DynaMan was one of the best shows ever.
Wow, I might have some tapes of it around somewhere. It used to be on our NBC affiliate Sunday nights at midnight, then it moved over to the CBS affiliate Saturday nights at… whatever time they felt like showing it. Then I got old overnight, decided I liked sleeping, and lost track of it entirely. But it was cool… except for Dynaman. I hated all-Dynaman episodes. When Power Rangers first appeared, I was sure Dynaman was the series it was based on. Ick.
Was looking through some old unlabeled videotapes the other night and actually found a tape containing a episode of Night Flight. Just a hour of underground music videos from Sonic Youth, Blast, Siouxsie and The Banshees, Fields Of The Nephilim, and a few more, but it sure brought back some memories.
