Nik Wallenda .Gonna go see?

Gonna go see Nik 2-day?

I’m not going to attend, and I don’t plan to watch on television. If he makes it, good for him. If he falls like Grandpa Wallenda, I don’t have a pressing need to witness that. (I have a suspicion that the morbid curiosity will increase in me tonight, and I can’t promise that I won’t end up tuning in…)

Hell no.

That kind of fuckery (lots of dithering, standing around waiting for something to happen, large crowd) isn’t my cup of tea. I originally planned to forgo the whole thing and let the internet tell me about it later, but I’m bored at home and decided to stream it. I’d say that’s better than standing in the cold in that ridiculous crowd.

So far, so good.

Did it without a single misstep!

Now he’s going to do a 94 foot horizontal walk between the the rooftops of the twin towers, blindfolded.

Which he once again pulls off without a hitch.

Watched it on the Discovery channel. His (great?) grandfather fell to his death on my birthday back in '78. Total drag.

Glad Nik made it.

I did! But it was accidental.

I’d gone downtown to meet up for dinner & drinks with some colleagues in town for the Pack Expo. I knew about the hoopla for the stunt and intended to stay far, far away from that mess. Dinner was at 8 and since you can never tell with traffic, I left at 7 from my Jeff Park HQ. Traffic on the Kennedy was minimal and I got to the area in 15 minutes.
While circling for parking and scouting the destination, it was impossible to not notice the many people staring up and southeast, pointing phones, traffic aides, helicopters hovering, etc, all odd for a Sunday night in November. Since I was so early, I figured WTH? and found a convenient street parking spot, put two bucks on the meter and hustled over to watch from about Clark and Grand, give or take a block.

Even though I was still pretty far away, we (there were many other people watching from there) could see him pretty well since the lighting was so good. It looks like I saw the second portion of the walk. I didn’t know he was blindfolded at the time.

All in all, it was kind of neat. Not something I’d go far out of my way to see but in a right-place-right-time situation, it was an interesting couple of minutes. It was an good story to be able to tell at dinner and at the office the next day.
