A friend is shooting a short film using a Canon EOS. Another friend says that a lot of filmmakers are using the 5d or 7d (but he wishes the audio were better). I have a Nikon FM3a and an FM2, and I like them. I thought I might pick up a D7000 for still photos, and maybe it would be good for shooting video as well.
Should I consider the D7000 as a ‘filmmaking’ camera? Or would I do better to consider a Canon?
The 5D has become a Hollywood standard despite being a little awkward for video use, mostly because of its gorgeous full frame sensor and the huge array of lenses to hang on it. Hard to choose anything else if you’re serious about cinema grade digital on a realistic budget.
You can get excellent audio with an external mike; most of the problems are from a so-so built in mike that picks up camera noise.
I love my 5D rig and have done some positively amazing things with it.
…the 5D doesn’t have video. The 5Dmk II and mk III do. I hear only good things about mk II and mk III video and I do have a 7D and the video is excellent, but I am unqualified to give advice as to whether or not it would suit your needs.
The other thing about the 5D Mk 2 is that there is a program called Magic Lantern that adds even more features to them to make them more video friendly. It has some risks, but is pretty popular.
