Nine year old well-house-trained cat starts peeing on the furniture?

I have a nine year old cat who is very well house trained - he always waits to be let outside before exercising his ‘movements’. He doesn’t have a cat flap (as he can’t work out how to use it) and doesn’t use a litter tray.

He seems well in himself - he certainly hasn’t lost his appetite (which has always been more than healthy), although we think he’s looking a little skinny compared to his normally rotund self.

But in the last week he has pee’d twice in our living room - once he jumped into the (unlit) fireplace to pee, and he has, just this minute, pee’d on a leather chair (which is next to the - now lit- fireplace).

Any advice on what might be causing this? I’m thinking he’s either (a) ill or (b) upset abut something in the house. The only changes I can identify in the living room are the christmas tree that is next to the fireplace, or the logs that we’re using to burn in the fireplace ommitting an odour that might disturb him (we live in a smokeless zone so the logs are treated in something). Also, some weeks ago a puppy dog came over and pee’d on the rug in front of the fire. It could be that, but this was a while ago.

Any advice or suggestions. We can’t scold him as it’s clearly out of character and something must be upsetting the poor little thing.

I’d suggest taking to your veterinarian and making sure that he doesn’t have a bladder infection. They are quite common in indoor male cats, and they can cause the cat to urinate inappropriately.

When my cat did that it was because of a UTI. He was in a lot of pain and had pretty severe blockage. Take yours to the vet ASAP to rule out this option.

When my cat peed ont he rug, it ended up being diabetes. Thirding the advice to take him to the vet.

To the vets it is then. Then he’s REALLY going to hate me

He’ll get over it. Especially if he’s suffering from an infection and you help make him feel better!

Good luck and keep us posted.
