Nintendo shows off unique games, accesories at E3

Smash Brothers is surprisingly popular among the hardcore. That said… yeah. I get the feeling we didn’t hear something.

I’m not a Sony fan, but apparently Sony has a bizarre fixation on past achievements when it comes to E3 keynote speeches: Ridge Racer!

Which they poked fun at this time 'round. “Hey Kaz, playing a bit of Riiidge Racer?” I was posting on another forum during the shows; even before Sony started I was wondering how they were going to get around what were pretty poor statistics when MS and Nintendo could point to good coverage over time and most consoles sold/sold out-edness respectively. And they went with the PS2, which surprised me but I suppose made good sense. It’s still a great console.

So what are people’s bets on the big mocking from this year? Nothing on Riiiiiidge Racer or Giant Enemy Crab lines, but i’m betting either Peter Moore’s fantastic failure to play Rock Band, or Chewie. Chewie!

To the “hardcore” gamer crowd:

One year ago, I was making ridiculous fun of the Wii. I hadn’t touched a nintendo product (well, I played a GBA for a week before returning it) since the SNES. I got one for my birthday…Wow.

I love this thing. Do I play it all the time? No. Do I spend most of my time on it? No. PC’s still rule. With that said, I feel it made me more of a “hardcore” gamer. I never would have thought about playing tennis, killing rabbits, or doing 1080’s in a truck on a nintendo before.

I look forward to everything they displayed.

I don’t think anyone’s denying that the Wii will be popular. Quite the opposite, I think this turn will bring in a lot of people who wouldn’t ordinarily be interested. I’m sure there’s plenty of “hardcore” gamers who will be happy with some of the more mainstream stuff. I know I am. I’d just like to be pandered to on top of that.

Wait, are you trying to say that those are gameplay shots? They’re clearly illustrations meant to show “what the game’s going to kind of be like.”

Um no… just no. If they wanted to make fake gameplay shots they’d look a lot nicer than that, and they wouldn’t be such a small resolution. True, they are not from the final retail product, since the HUD has been removed, but that doesn’t mean they’re totally fake.

Right now there’s a short movie of gameplay on the top of the site I just linked to. If you want to believe that it was a pre-rendered video, go ahead, because I have no clue where I would find an authoritative cite saying otherwise. But if that’s a cinematic, they sure as heck are good at making it look like actual gameplay.

Oh! Now I remember, they’re called bullshots!

Not that the SSBB shots are, but that’s the word for it.

They can keep the damn guitar and give me a keyboard instead. I hate using the Wiimote to enter text on the crappy-enough-without-making-me-use-a-stick-as-an-input-device browser.

Good call. These I would say are bullshots, except for the one at the very bottom of the page. These, however, look far too dynamic to be pre-renders.

Out of the second link, only the bottom two are probably real. The top two are clearly as fake as those in the other link.

Yes. They’re exactly as fake as those in the other link.

In short, a minor graphical improvement over the Gamecube version, so probably real.

Yes, most games on Wii are hideous. Yet <B>Mario Galaxy<b? is one of the most beautiful games I have seen on any console, Xbox 360 and PS3 included.

And the music is mesmorizing.

Yeah I have to second that. I just finished Metroid Prime: Hunters and there’s nothing else on the system that even remotely excites me that’s less than 6 months old. Isn’t there a Zelda game that’s supposed to come out for the DS sometime?

Yes, Phantom Hourglass on October 1st, which has received amazing reviews from both Japan (where it has been released) and imported Americans. I hated Wind Waker, but by all accounts, this game looks amazing.

Try Planet Puzzle League for the DS. This really is the best puzzle game I’ve ever played. It’s got great multi-player modes, including Wi-Fi play.
