What Wii news from E3?

Since I only have Wii, and I don’t want to wade through all the Xbox, PS3, PSP, DS, PC, Mac, etc etc news.

Anything exciting?

Thanks.

Actually…no. It has been pretty low key from Nintendo, it seems. No new Zelda game, a couple of New Mario games, and some sort of biometric pulse reading thingee for your finger that left a lot of people scratching their heads, since Nintendo didn’t relaly say what it was for.

I heard there was a new Zelda game, but it was for the DS. Also, there’s a new Mario game: Super Mario Bros Wii.

That looks awesome. I expressed desire for this exact game here awhile back, and JB told me is was possible. Can’t believe it will be here in November. I can’t wait.

Sometimes, I just dislike new powerups they create, just for the sake of creating them. The Fireflower, Star, and Mushroom are in the pantheon, but outside of that, what else? I thought the Leaf would certainly be in, but I don’t know anymore.

The propellor suits look cool. I also like the multiplayer aspect. It might encourage my wife to play.

Also they announced a new Metroid for next year, developed by Team Ninja. They made a small mention of Wii Pikmin and Wii Zelda, but both (Zelda particularly) are quite far off.

The point I was trying to make is that powerups to get through one board or one world are kinda silly and I prefer to not have many of them around. Super Mario 3, for example, had only one odd one, Kuribo’s Shoe. Super Mario Galaxy had the Bee one, the Ice one, and others that I’ve forgotten/haven’t got to. Mega Man’s powerups, for example, were all useful, although in some circumstances, some were more useful than others. In recent years, Mario’s had some odd ones.
My bad for the hijack. If it picks up, I’ll happily move it to another thread.

New Zelda.
Super Mario galaxy 2.
A new Metroid game.
Red steel 2.
Muramasa: the demon blade.
No more heroes 2.

I tried really hard to get into Twilight Princess and Metroid Prime, and couldn’t, so I’m not terribly excited for new games in those franchises. I can’t wait for New SMB Wii and Mario Galaxy 2, though, and I’m even getting a little excited for Wii Sports Resort. Does anybody know if the games in that have a little more depth? I hope they’re not brief, unrealized “demo” type games like Wii Sports.

The hammer suit, tanuki, and frog suit in Mario 3 were just as ubiquitous as the bee and ice flower.

To go back to the OP, there was a lot of noise about some cool first party titles and not a whole lot else. Game publishers are still pretending that the Wii is not the largest console market.

The hammer suit popped up in a few places, and most commonly in the White Mushroom houses, if I recall. I remember having a glut of the Frog suits.

I was looking to see if anyone had started a general E3 thread, but I don’t know how I missed this one.

I’m going to have to disagree with Gangster Octopus, the Wii had a fantastic E3. If for no other reason than New Super Mario Bros Wii. Christ do I want that game like right now.

Other big deals include the new Zelda for the Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid: Other M (which brings the series back to 3rd person). Red Steel 2 might just be the FPS on the system as Ubisoft received help from Retro Studios to make it. 2D fighter **Tatsunoko Vs Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars ** is also getting raves, but I think it helps if you’re an anime fanboy. Sakura Wars has also peaked the anime fanboy’s interest.

Then there’s Wii Sports Resort, which looks a lot more complex than Wii Sports. And for RPG fans, there’s Final Fantasy: The Crystal Bearers, Fragile and Arc Rise Fantasia.

High Voltage showed off their next two games beind closed doors (but video is available at IGN): Gladiator AD (a one-on-one fighting game) and The Grinder (an FPS similar to Left 4 Dead, but more story based and includes vampires and werewolves in addition to zombies). Obviously, The Conduit was also around, but that comes out in three weeks.

Capcom had Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles, another light gun game. But it looks nifty.

Finally, while they weren’t showcased, Sin & Punishment 2 and Monster Hunter 3 were both given release dates: early 2010.

I really hope New Super Mario Bros. Wii gets online play; I’d be thrilled. But it doesn’t look like it will.

Still, as I saw someone somewhere describe it, it seems all set to be “a warm hug from your childhood”, which is about all I want from gaming in general these days.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that since Nintendo said it was local only at E3, they’re not going to add online to New Super Mario Bros. Wii before its fall release.

Ah. I didn’t realize they had explicitly said that it would lack online support (though I did acknowledge that was probably the case). Good to know.

That’s upsetting.

Why? It doesn’t strike me as an online game at all, unless there’s a death match demo out there I didn’t see.

Because LOUNE thinks everything should be online and if it’s not, the game is deficient in some way.

Never mind the fact that this is an old school Mario game that is mainly being designed for single-player play with the multiplayer modes as a bonus. Yes, you’ll be able to play the whole game with multiplayer, but the drop-in, drop-out nature of the multiplayer shows that its not required in any way.

Wii Fit Plus was also announced, although as currently described it sounds more like a glorified expansion pack than a true sequel.
