NJ Dopers--anyone know a good carpenter?

So, our gutter contractors apparently left a hole in the side of our house when they replaced our gutters, and now we have mold in our toddler’s closet–a bad situation. We need to have the hole repaired and the sheetrock replaced. Does anyone know a good carpenter, somewhere near Union County ow one who’s willing to travel to Union County? We need one pretty quickly. Thanks.

Jesus

If you can’t get him try Harrison Ford.

You don’t need a carpenter. You need a general handy-man kind of person. A carpenter, well in this part of the world, is a craftsman who works with wood.

Are gutters eves troughs?

I know of a few carpenters in NJ but none near Union county, sorry. I had a similiar problem with our porch roof that needed to be replaced because of shoddy roofing. My BIL is a union carpenter and he fixed it but he’s in south Jersey.

How about if you went to your local Home Depot or Lowes? If they don’t do the work they might be able to recommend some names.

I hate to say this but you usually get what you pay for. How about if you contacted the local union in your area and see if they could recommend someone?

Hurt yourself while typing?

Yes, but the Jesus and Harrison Ford recommendations made it all better.

Turns out I can’t use a carpenter after all. The one we found said we needed a company that does gutters (though not the one who installed these badly). The gutter company we called said we needed a roofer. The roofer hasn’t called us back, but I’m guessing he’ll say we need a veterinarian.

Thanks for trying though.

The good news is that the veterinarian’s sister’s ex-husband’s brother-in-law is on work release and does gutters.

How about some pictures? Then we can vote on which practitioner you really need.

Too bad you’re not in Burlington or Mercer county-then I could stop by later this week.

Ceejaytee, what exactly is the problem with the gutter?

It might be a simple repair using a lot of silicone caulk and then hiring a sheetrocker to open the wall, bleach the affected area and then replacing the sheetrock with a new piece. You might need to replace some insulation.

Except for the sheetrock the job might not be too bad as a DIY.

Jim, the mold remediator said that the gutter people punched a nice hole in the roof where the gutters are attached and never filled it in. It doesn’t sound like caulk’s enough to fix it. We need someone to close the outside hole and then we need to have the sheetrock removed. We just put in foam insulation, so hopefully that’s okay. It’s waterproof, isn’t it? I hope so, because it wasn’t cheap and it’s not as easy to replace as fiberglass.

The veterinarian option’s looking better. Thanks danceswithcats. Too bad you’re so far away.

I have one slightly used carpenter for rent. After today, I think I’d let him go pretty cheap. NJ seems just about perfect…

If the hole is in the roof, then you definitely need a roofer. My gutters were installed by my roofer as well, so if they are installed improperly, then he can fix that as well. It sounds like the bad sheetrock is on the ceiling correct? Replacing that patch of insulation might not be so tough or expensive. As for replacing the sheetrock, that may be something that you can do yourself, if I can do it, you can do it.

Are you familiar with Angie’s List? It might be worth your while to sign up. (I’m too lazy to post a link right now.)

Angie’s List is, IME, a pretty good way to find good, reliable contractors of just about any sort.

And, no, I don’t work for them. Nor do I own stock in them. But I’ve used their recommendations before with success.

Thanks Scribble, I’ll look for Angie’s list. The roofer was here today and fixed the hole. Now it’s back to the mold remediator. The roofer was great; came this morning, gave us an estimate, we agreed, and he came back an hour later and fixed it. If anyone in NJ cares, it was Penyak Roofing.

There’s a thread that might be good to make, but I wonder if it would put the Reader in a bad position. Contractors to avoid by state. I would tell everyone in the NJ/Penn area to avoid Petro Oil. Very bad work and delivery.

Good Luck with the repairs. I wish I had better advice for you.

Jim

By the way Angie’s List is fantastic!

Thanks for the recommendation, Scribble.
