Travelling through the Garden State I noticed signs on the side of the road that I hadn’t seen before. They looked like a semi truck viewed from the back (one large black square above two groups of 2 smaller upright rectangles, one to the left, one to the right) with the number 102 on it. Some signs were circled with green, others were circled and “slashed” with red.
It’s part of a state-wide effort to keep 18 wheelers on the major highways and off the 2-lane back roads.
Trucks headed to New York and New England from Philly and south will use Rts. 31, 202, and 206 to avoid paying turnpike tolls. People compained (rightfully, IMO) and the state tried to ban 18 wheelers from these roads.
Turns out by law they couldn’t so they did the next best thing they could. They banned overwidth (102") trailers from certain roads.
I think NJ should build the Missing Link of I-95 between Trenton and NYC, but what do I know? I don’t work for the Turnpike Commission.
Thank you, and I totally agree with you on the missing link. The first time I was heading towards NYC on 95, got on 295, and didn’t realize I was headed back south until I saw the lights of Philly. I was not happy. The guy at the gas station thought it was funny.
