No Avatars Here? Why?

You’re trying to inject rationality into it again!

Moving on… RoyGBiv posted some cool badges. Is there a way to incorporate those into the script, or has it already been done and I missed it?

Very simple, whineless answer. The software feature is turned off for this board.

Hey I just noticed my avatar is working now! This is so awesome. Thank you so much for this  If only more users would get in on the avatar action.

Who exactly is responsible for coding this and making it so easy to use? Thanks to whoever implemented it with Chrome! It was just so easy.

It was an effort by Polerius, **ntucker **and myself - mostly Polerius and ntucker but for my small part you’re welcome.

I actually think it is superior to the built-in avatars, even if they were enabled, because you can change the avatar size, block individual avatars and assign custom avatars to other posters. (and anything else you can dream up and script for yourself to customize it). Now that it’s down to a one-click installation it is as easy to use as built-in avatars would be.

Rough guess now is that 20% of all Dopers are using them. I have no idea how many never come here to this subforum and thus are ignorant that they can add them now.

20% of all Dopers use avatars in general, or 20% use this particular avatar program?

Are you going to start that again? For purposes of this discussion, both are the same.

I’m not starting jack shit-overreact much? I’m just asking for clarification.

They can’t possibly be the same, which is why I am asking for clarification.

Since those are the only ones on this board, they are the same. It was the hypothetical other possibilities about avatars (which don’t have anything to do with this duscussion) I was talking about you “starting that again”.

What about people who don’t use Chrome or Firefox?

I plan to get this going myself when I have some time. Unfortunately I am loathe to install greasemonkey on my work computer so I’ll just be seeing avatars at home.

Well, the ones which could be enabled by the board code itself don’t exist, so there’s your difference. Why you going all Bricker over me, anyway?

Just wondering how you rough-guessed that “20%” figure.

I saw someone mention how we can assign other users avatars, but I didn’t see any explanation how to do that. Was this explained somewhere already? If not, could anyone give me a brief instruction on how to do this?

Maybe we can take up a collection and buy them a copy.

Sarcasm aside, if someone doesn’t want to change their browser for some reason, then the plain fact is they won’t be able to use this program. It’s one (but only one) of the reasons I won’t use it.

What browser are you using?

I ask because at work we are stuck with IE and we are not allowed to change it.

Situations like that are the reason that this is a highly imperfect solution. If you really want avatars for real without hackery or weird exceptions, lobby the board administration, who will continue to display their regard for their customers’ wishes as they see fit.

I think you are talking past each other. Your question isn’t clear.

Are you asking about how dopers use avatars on other boards vs how dopers use avatars here? I think the intent was a guess at how many are using them here.

This is a better question. So, John DiFool, how did you determine that 20% figure?

Note that the number of people displaying an image/link in their profile does not equal the number of people running the script (or any script) to make avatars visible. The two actions are separate, though there is likely overlap in motivations.
