Neither *Fahrenheit 911 * or *Passion of the Christ * is eligible for best picture under their rules . We have to wait for the Oscars for sparks to fly.
I don’t think either really should be considered anyhow. I can think of a number of films better than both of them. I didn’t hate either of them, mind you.
I would agree that there were better films and neither of these should win (though I to thought they were both interesting). That said, 9/11 did win at Cannes and Passion was one of the highest grossing films of the year, so I think it would be hard to justify not at least nominating them for Oscars if they qualify by the rules.
Plus I kind of like the idea of a documentary winning best pic.
I can’t see any reason why either of them would be barred from being nominated for the Oscars. Farenheit will probably be nominated for best doc and I have a feeling it will win (it was okay but it wasn’t my favorite of the year). There’s no reason why Passions would be barred from nominations either. It will get a few nominations in technical categories but I don’t think it’ll be nominated for any major one.
The Academy has quite strict rules regarding the timing of the release of documentaries in other formats. Moore tried to get F9/11 aired before the election. (But somehow failed. Liberal media, yeah right.) So he did not try to get it nominated for Best Doc. Cite
Interesting.
