Has anyone been watching the 30 for 30 documentary series on ESPN?
I thought the most recent one, No Crossover: The Trial of Allen Iverson, was brilliant. It’s ostensibly about basketball star Allen Iverson’s 1993 trial in high school for his involvement in a bowling-alley brawl, but it really focuses on community race/class relations and on the filmmaker’s role in telling the story.
In my opinion, there’s a lot to digest in the film, and I’m curious what people have to say about it.
I watched it last night. While I’m a college basketball fan, I’m more of a UK fan than anything, so wasn’t really paying attention when all of this was going on.
Having watched it, I’m of two minds…I do believe that he was allowed to get away with a lot, and probably pushed things too far. He might not have hit the girl with a chair, but I have no doubt that he either verbally or physically stepped things up that night.
On the other hand, had he not been who he was, I don’t think he would’ve been tried as an adult or given the sentence that he got. So his fame worked against him with that.
Good episode from what has been a really good series.
