No "Edited" flag on Posts/Replies?

As far as I can tell there’s no display on posts or replies to indicate that the OP edited the content and when. This could be a problem if people are using this to manipulate debates.

Also, has the 5 minute limit on edits been removed? Not horribly opposed to that change but wonder how we’ll prevent people from changing the context of discussions without an audit trail.

Actually, after a little testing this appears to be available on OTHER user’s posts (see reply) but not visible on your own. Weird.

Did you edit this post? I was reading it and the text updated before my eyes. But there’s no “edited” flag that I can see.

I did.

And now I see that there IS a 5 minute cut off for edits.

…And I can’t add an image to a post or reply even though the editor allows it…topic for another thread.

I’m seeing a “edited” icon which shows the time on hover on posts in other forums to the right of the user’s name next to the post date/time. Not sure why it’s not shown here.

If they turn on a longer editing window, there’s no notification of edits for the first five minutes. (There is, but only admin can see it.)

For edits after five minutes (which we can’t currently do), an orange pencil will appear in the post’s heading. Anyone will be able to click it and see the full editing history of the post.

Why am I seeing that in some other threads? Was the setting changed in the last 24 hours to restrict the edit time?

This is why.

If you quote the most recent post in full, system automatically deletes the quote, and the orange pencil appears. The poster can click on it to see the history, but nobody else can.

With an edit window of longer than 5 minutes, anybody can click on the orange pencil to see the post history.

I understand why that feature is there, but it’s really a bit confusing in the way it’s implemented. The editor warns you not to do it and then it posts it and then the UI updates multiple times to remove it. Bizarre. Plus there’s no way to override it for certain special circumstances.

Also no idea why only the OP would be able to see the audit trail and not all users. Perhaps this is a special case, but it seems like an unnecessary complication.

Edit: I’m noticing in my tests that it’s a little weird that it removes the post when it’s a perfect match including any blockquotes but not when it include all the non-blockquote text. That’s a tougher problem for the software but in effect quoting the non-blockquote text is just as big a faux pas. Not a great implementation IMHO.

All users can, if the post is edited after the 5 minute window (which we can’t do right now).

Posts edited during the first five minutes are under a different rule. But if a high-muckety-muck like system or an admin edits it in that time (like to remove a quote or to change forums), the notice is shown, but only to the poster.

I wish they’d just turn it off entirely. It causes more headaches than it solves.

That’s my assessment as well.

I think these fine distinctions are another area where the software is doing a little too much.

Yup. Discourse tends to nanny.
