No, I won't give you your prescription back

Linky McLinklink

Okay, I can understand, maybe, not wanting to fill prescriptions you don’t believe in. Maybe even, if you find a certain course of action tantamount to murder, even refusing to provide a transfer, like some other druggists mentioned in the article.

But WHAT possessed you of the idea that it was proper to detain a customer’s prescription? Holy flying mother of fuck!

That’s beyond the pale.

I absolutely support his right to refuse to fill the prescription. But he has no right to refuse to return the thing. That’s simply idiotic.

That’s terrible.

I don’t even think pharmacists should have the right not to fill prescriptions they “disagree” with. If you’re a vegetarian working in a fast food restaurant, would you be able to say “no, I’m not serving that person their Big Mac, I’ll only touch salads.” No, you’d get fired. Or if I was a pharmacist, and someone who I know came in to fill their Xanax prescription, and I know that they didn’t really need it but were instead abusing the substance, it would not be my place to not fill that order. The doctor wrote it out, his authority trumps mine.

Besides theft, what could a pharmacist displaying such behavior be charged with? Could attempted bodily harm conceivably stick?

Err, maybe “conceivably” wasn’t the best word…

Bad example. None-too-bright customer is going from doctor-to-doctor getting Xanax prescriptions, but keeps returning to same pharmacist. You have information doctor number 6 may not have. Now, you have authority to, at the very least, confront the doctor with new evidence as to the patients needs.

More benign. Elderly patient sees several doctors, but doesn’t remember all the prescriptions s/he takes. You notice a prescription which adversely reacts to another. As the prescription gatekeeper, your authority can and will trump the doctor.

However, to refuse a prescription on religious beliefs AND to refuse the patient to transfer a legal prescription elsewhere: should be criminal.

Disregard my question. State by state with legislation both on the increase and pending.

Wow, that burns me up. I keep picturing myself in that situation as the pharamicist refused to give my perscription back…I’d flip out and probably try and physically take it back. Certainly a call to 911 that some dude stole your perscription would be in order.

Any pharmacist that does not want to meet the requirements of the job should find another profession.

I do not support the right of a pharmacist to refuse to fill the prescription at all let alone do what this man did. What if the woman in question is getting the b/c pills because she has endometriosis or was raped? And if she isn’t what business of it is his? He has no right to know why she’s using the pill and therefore no grounds to refuse to fill it. It’s simply none of his business.

Want to bet this asshole has no problem filling prescriptions for viagra?

While I can see some situation in which a pharmacist might refuse to fill a prescription (abuse, conflicts with other medication currently prescribed to the patient, etc.), I positively do NOT support this pharmacist’s decision. I hope the pharmacist mentioned in the article is stripped of his license–not for refusing to fill it but for refusing to give the customer back her slip.

Fucker.

Something similar happened earlier this year.

Why the hell don’t those pharmacists find a job then at a pharmacy that would allow them to do this?

If that had happened to me, I’d whip out my cell phone and inform said pharmacist if that if he did not return my slip, I would call the cops and report him for theft. What the FUCK???

Fuck, fuck fuck! You know, I can sometimes understand people’s objections to abortion. Doesn’t mean I agree, but I understand. But I personally feel that an objection to birth control is wrong. Don’t want to use it yourself, fine. But saying no one should is fucked up. And to take a job at a place where you KNOW they dispense these medications and then refuse to do your goddamn job and fulfill the prescriptions, and actually attempt to steal someone’s scrip? How the fuck is THAT moral, asshole?

Oooooh, this is pissing me off!

Yeah, probably a bad example. What about the vegetarian thing though?

And considering that birth control pills have uses beyond that of preventing conception, like using them for endometriosis or acne medication, this was totally medically irresponsible. I guess this case is just another reason why everyone should use online pharmacies instead; they’re usually cheaper and there’s no chance they’ll steal your prescription!

I think I’ve posted this before in a similar thread, but I’m rather uncomfortable with the argument that pharmacists should fill birth control pill prescriptions because the pills are good for other things like endometriosis, or maybe she was raped. What happens if they come up with another cure for endometriosis? We meekly give up birth control pills, unless we feel like filing charges for rape? Birth control is a perfectly legitimate and legal reason to want birth control pills. I don’t need another reason.

My thought exactly.

I’m sure this asshole is equitable in her morality enforcement though, and asks for a valid marriage license before distributing Viagra or Cialis.

Absolutely. If someone does not want to perform what they believe to be an immoral act while working, that person should not take a job that will require it. They can go do some other type of work where these ethical dilemmas do not occur.

Another reason to be happy I get my pills through Planned Parenthood. Our pharmacist would never do this to me, but I’d be paying more if I got them from her anyway.

So do I. But I believe the consequence of his action should be the loss of his license and job.

Any pharmacy which allows their pharmacists to exercise their right to choice in such a fashion should be forced to post a sign:

Our pharmacists do not fill BCPs because we do not agree with them on a moral basis

Even though I no longer take BCPs I could still exercise my rights by turning on my heel and leaving.

Refusing to return the scrip? THEFT leaps to mind.

Yep. This jackass reminds me of those poltroons who joined the National Guard for the benefits and then were shocked, shocked to find themselves sent off to war.
