No, I'm not a Skinhead, thanks.

tiggeril, how in the world did I miss that?!
Holy cow, where has he been hiding?
Yummy! A new face for bedtime.
Next time you hit Iowa let me know so I can repay you with a night out.

I know just what you mean. There were a lot (I say were because I have been out of touch with that world for many years…Im old now)of skins in this area who went back and forth. It seemed like one week they would be non-racist, and the next they would be trying to hang out with the hammer skins, then they would have a change of heart and go back. These people you couldnt trust period. But there were also the ones who were a bit more stable, and I never had any problems with them. But I became a bit suspicious of anyone with a bald head, flight jacket, and oxblood docs.

I don’t want to burst your bubble or anything Gary, but hair loss is a maternal gene, so if you want to know about the state of your hair when you are older look at your mother’s father.

you’re kidding me, right? people actually have the gall to ask if you’re a racist just because you shaved your head??

my s.o. has a very nice tattoo on his right forearm. it’s a black widow with an iron cross in the web. it was the symbol of a tattoo shop he worked for, and has some significance about his friends, but has nothing to do with racism. i think that in the nine months he has had this tattoo, one person has asked if he was a racist. some little nazi punk at the gas station.

now, i don’t understand this. nine months of having an iron cross on his arm, my s.o. gets called a racist once. you shave your head and suddenly everyone thinks you’re a skinhead???

Ahhh shit, he had a full head of hair right up to the end. Maybe I could just get a really bad wig or something. I was really looking forward to having comedy hair when I got older.

Sorry to burst your bubble, Kitty, but male pattern baldness is caused by the narrowing of hair follicles due to a genetically inherited reaction to testosterone. This reaction can be inherited from either side of your family. My mother’s father had a full head of black hair until he died from cancer at the age of 63. I inherited the same kind of hair he had, very soft and full, however, I started losing my hair when I was 18. No men on my mother’s side of the family have thinning hair. So, I guess I can say “Thanks dad.”

Well, the only person that actually said anything about me being racist was a friend, who was just being obnoxious.

However, AFAIK, for most people where I live there is no such thing as a non-racist skinhead. It’s automatically assumed that if you are a skinhead, you are a neo-nazi type. That’s not to say that there are no non-racist skinheads, but not many people consider the fact there could be. The only experience I’ve had with non-racist skinheads was way back when I was in Jr. High, so I know they exist, I just haven’t met any since. I am not a skinhead either way. Hell, the way I dress should be clue enough for these people: slacks and collared shirts or t-shirt and khaki shorts with sandals. Mildly yuppie-ish.

I’ve been told that I’m rather intimidating until you get to know me, so maybe people just assume the worst. I dunno, I don’t try to be.

Mustache and goatee.

I think, and have been told by several women, that I look good with my hair like this. Makes my head more symmetrical I guess. :stuck_out_tongue:

I guess I should have included “enjoying kicking the crap out of people” in my list of skinhead qualifications. Yeah, you’re right…even the non-racist skinheads are usually into fighting and obnoxious aggressiveness. But…they’re not racist!

I used to be a non-racist skinhead so am offended by the ignorant assumption that just because someone decides to shave their head means that they are also “obnoxiously aggressive”. I just wanted to shave my head and did it.

I can bring forward many examples of people I know and knew who decided at one time or another to shave their heads. Many of them did it because they were losing it anyway and weren’t going for the comb-over as attractive as that look can be.

Someone asked me if I was a skinhead once… yeah, and Lola is with me because she’s trying to reform my wicked nazi-esque ways. Duh!

Actually, Lola threatened there will be dire consequences if I ever shaved my head again so I’ve been reformed, have a bunch of hair, and still get to have hot monkey sex from time to time.

Worse yet, some people had the gall to ask Hamish (who is not a skinhead) if he was a Nazi because he was learning German and he had a post-unification German flag on his coat. Gah!

I’m a skinhead, complete with the standard-issue Fred Perry polo, braces and Doc Martens. Unfortunately, I get all the shit that comes with it - people ask me if I’m a thug or a racist, or look at me funny in the street. Completely ignoring the fact that the guy in a suit standing next to them may, for all they know, be both. For the record, I’m neither.

Constantly having to explain my image to people soon gets old. Some people just cannot grasp the concept that it’s just what suits me and feels most comfortable. No disrespect to preppy types, but I would feel dorky and uncomfortable done up like that, because it’s not me.

From personal experience, I would say that the vast majority of skins are no different to anyone else out there. Most are very pleasant, respectable people, a few are not. Rather like any other group of people from what I can tell. There’s good and bad across the whole of society, and it’s unfortunate that some groups in particular are subjected to preconceived ideas and judgements.

I thought that having things double post was bad, triple posting?

So, I hit “submit reply”, wait a few seconds then hit “esc” and reload the page if this doesn’t post.

Bear with me folks, the server and my computer seem to have had some kind of spat…

Braces? Like teeth braces? Or like, leg braces? Could someone explain this to me? Teeth braces were a bitch for me, I can’t imagine anyone intentionally getting them. BTW, wasn’t one of the pasttimes of skinheads to get the shit kicked outta them? That would really hurt to be popped in the mouth.

Thanks!

braces = suspenders

She was my height, my weight, my size, she wore braces and blue jeans

Skinhead girl, she was my
Skinhead girl, she was my
Skinhead girl

Hadn’t thought about it in a bit. This thread reminds me of all the baggage that came with growing my hair long in the '60s. No way did I embrace all that was shoveled into the common duffel bag of “what those hippie dudes think” but it came with the territory. And people would come up out of the blue to assail you (or I guess in this case, me) because of it.

Perhaps my perception that there’s such a wide range of styles remaining current is the source of my surprise that you actually catch flack for this still.

And Feynn, it’s not just you; the boards are quirky today - I’ve double posted elsewhere.

I asked my husband, who shaves his head, whether anyone has ever mistaken him for a skinhead. He said, “No. When I come bopping up in a Hawaiian shirt and Birkenstocks, they know.” Ha ha.
