I went out last night with a friend, and tried to take some meteor photos.
I captured a few, but they were faint and unimpressive, but I did end up with a nice star trail photo:
Is this a stitched image? Is that why the star trails stutter?
I guess you probably have to do that with digital, eh? Can’t take 30 minute exposures like in film days any more.
Still, pretty cool. Is that a fisheye lens?
Yes, it is a stacked image created from ~150 individual 30 second exposures. There were a few images at the beginning that I should drop from the render, since the gaps between them are very noticeable. Also, I bumped the tripod towards the end, which resulted in a little jog in the trails :smack:
Yeah, digital requires multiple short exposures, unless you have a cryogenically cooled sensor. My new camera has excellent long-exposure noise, but still can’t be used for more than a minute or two without significant noise creeping in.
And, yes, it’s an 8mm Samyang fish-eye.
