No mosquitos on Vancouver Island

Okay, there are, but they are rare. In the twenty four years I’ve lived on the island in three different communities and a host of different campsites, not once have I been tormented by the cessation of the sound of a flying mosquito as I am try to fall asleep. The number of times I’ve beem bitten on the island I’m sure does not exeed the number of fingers on my hand. I’ve never used window screens on the island either.

I don’t see more or less standing water in the areas I live in or frequent. I do see lots of bats but I understand that they are too slow for catching mosquitos.

Can anyone explain this?

Actually, Bats are known to eat mosquitos.

I don’t know what communities on the island you’ve lived in, but here in the Comox Valley we have plenty of mosquitoes. They’re much more plentiful near rivers/creeks/lakes than they are in town, but I live near a river and a creek, and spend as much time at Comox Lake as possible.

No shortage of the fuckers in Nanaimo, either. And they don’t seem to be slowed down much by window screens, either, somehow.

Well fellow islanders, perhaps its all relative. I lived in the Hub City in the early 80’s, and last night I was at Bill Moore Park watching the Vanier High School football team getting trounced  . It could be that you two have never experienced mosquitos like people do in the rest of Canada. For me and my eastern visiting relatives, The lack of mosquitos constantly comes up as a topic of conversation.
