No picture on LCD TV. Any way to fix it?

My TV screen went black while I was watching it. I still have sound, but no picture from any of the inputs. I’m comfortable working with electronics without electrocuting myself, but I’m not an electrician. I’m going to take off the back cover to see if anything looks obvious. Anything I should look for?

Assuming I don’t see anything, is there any point to taking it in for repair? Any other ideas?

I’m aware that LCD TVs have a backlight, but I don’t think that’s the issue here. When I turn it on, the screen goes from black to very dark grey, I assume from the light coming on. Also, if I shine a flashlight at the screen, there’s no hint of an image. But tell me if I’m wrong about the light.

It’s a JVC LT-40X776, about 5 years old.

ETA: the manual describes resetting the digital tuner by holding Channel- and Volume-, and I’ve done that, but no help. I’ve also tried turning it off for about an hour to let it reset. I’ll try leaving it off until tomorrow morning then trying it, just in case (that long is necessary with my wife’s bread machine when it won’t work).

Modern LCD monitors fail in endless ways. Most times, it’s not worth fixing, even though the LCD itself is fine. It will generally require replacing the logic board, and they are priced so high that it almost always makes more sense to just buy a new unit. Sad but true.

At least JVC is a brand that might have a parts distribution system.

Good luck finding that for brands like Westinghouse, Sylvania or Polaroid or house brands. Without repair networks and parts distribution, those are essentially ‘disposable’ televisions.

You’re going to have to start metering out the various voltages from the power supply board and find out which sub board is putting the PS into protection.

I have a service manual. Shoot me a PM and I’ll give you a link.

Thanks everyone. MrFloppy, I sent you a PM. jasg, that’s an interesting link. I’ll take that into account when I get a new TV (probably, unless I can figure out what’s wrong and buy a replacement part…).

I did take the back off. There was a fuse, but it was OK. All the caps looked OK as well. Visually, the only issue was some dust, which I vacuumed up.
