I like the old classic look. It’s been around over half a century, it’s now traditional. Might as well paint the White House blue as change the plane.
I prefer the lower-contrast old one.
I’d prefer a pure white scheme.
So would Trump. Amirite? ![]()
If I had to buy a plane and were offered 2 otherwise identical planes except for the paintjob I’d go with the Trumpian one, but neither look good or bad, they’re both solid meh.
The new proposed design looks too much like Trump trying to insert his brand into the presidency. For that reason, I prefer the old.
As much as I am critical of amything Mr. Trump does, I cannot find a lot of fault with the redesign. It incorporates red, white, and the proper shade of blue (America’s colors); and as long as it only says “United States of America” on the fuselage, it seems to me to be fine.
Of course, if it said, “United States of America, featuring President Donald J. Trump,” then I’d have a problem. I wouldn’t put it past him to try such a thing in the future, but as things stand now, I have no problem with the redesign.
I liked the new a lot better. I aesthetically prefer the darker colors, and they are closer to the official American colors. I was expecting some horribly tacky thing, but what I saw looked like just what I’d expect Airforce 1 to look like. The old one just looked wrong.
I suspect Trump didn’t design it. Not for political reasons, just that his tastes run more tacky. Trump doesn’t design things that look good, and that was true pre-presidency.
See, I don’t think it matches those at all. All of the Trump designs look tacky. But, like I said, as someone who never really paid any attention to what Airforce 1 looked like, that second picture is closer to what I just imagine it would look like.
Yes, it has the flag colors, but doesn’t look tacky. It looks elegant. The old design looks tacky. Light blue on white just doesn’t look good–too low contrast.
I like the old one, maybe just because it’s what I’ve come to expect after seeing it on the news so many times.
The new one reminds me of a design from the 1960s. Stewardesses in uniforms and people puffing away on smokes and getting their brains shrivelled on martinis.
That’s what I was afraid of when Trump said he want Air Force One to look “more American”, but the new design looks reasonably inoffensive. Rather bland, but inoffensive.
I agree. I’m really surprised at many of the comments in this thread and in the poll results. I’ve always thought that the current AF1 livery was a work of art, commissioned by a First Lady for whom style was a watchword, and executed by a renowned designer. In fact, Raymond Loewy’s sketches for the AF1 design are on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Interestingly, his original design had a bit of red at the front, slightly reminiscent of the red/orange on the absolutely horrible design that preceded it. It was Kennedy who decided to make it all blue, which created a beautiful elegant simplicity and avoided the color clash.
The new design is just fugly. I would say that regardless of who the Prez was, in reference to the OP asking for a Trump-independent assessment. Nevertheless I can’t resist speculating that it it looks like a bunch of drones came up with a bunch of different designs and Trump, in typical fashion, picked the most tasteless one (has anyone seen pics of his New York apartment? It looks like a cross between Versailles and Tutankhamun’s tomb). It’s both crass and dated, and hopefully never gets implemented. I forget the timeframe for delivery of the new AF1s but I think Trump will be gone by then and hopefully more sensible heads will decide to keep the current iconic design.
I’d go for the new design if it used the same blue as the flag. As is, it’s a toss-up.
