A year or two ago, my wife and I saw a news show like 60 minutes. They interviewed parents that told of disease that they didn’t even know their child had. I can’t remember exactly how they discovered this, but the parents found out that a symptom of an illness was the lack of red eye in photos. They had their child checked and was lucky to catch the illness in time.
I have a Sony digital camera that is about 3 years old. My wife and I was looking at pictures when we noticed that everyone had red eye in about half their pictures, but my son has no red eye photos at all since the beginning of the year.
I asked his doctor, but she had never heard about this. I tried looking on google, but my search choices aren’t grabbing anything useful. I now turn to the teeming millions. If there is a reservoir of knowledge that would know what I am talking about, I have to look no further.
I would appreciate your help in this. Part of me thinks that news stories, such as the one I am referring, try to hype the scare factor. Part of me thinks that it could be a natural thing that some people have no red eye effects. But the parent in me is still worried about that story many months ago.
Apparently what you don’t want to see is a white dot instead of a red one. Could be a retinoblastoma or other retinal disease, cataracts, or so on. If you’re worried, an opthamalogist can quickly check things out.
However, it’s likely that your son just has dark eyes or isn’t looking at the camera.
Thank you very much. That is exactly the story I was remembering. My son does look directly into the camera (he’s a serious ham). I suppose it is because of his dark eyes. They are almost black.
I’m pretty sure dark-eyed people just don’t get red eye. I remember when our family moved to Australia from China. One of our new discoveries was “Hey, white people’s eyes turn red in photos!”
