Yes, but its brought to you by Their Sponsor…
I’m from England. Today, it was 19 degrees C. It’s fucking weird. I wouldn’t be investing in beach front properties any time soon.
Why not both? Because climate change doesn’t have anything to do with El Nino. The last very strong one was in 1997-1998, when you were probably in diapers, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. :dubious:
I was in San Diego during the 1997-98 El Nino and it rained, and rained, and rained . . . and rained some more. Then more.
The El Nino theories about this year are interesting.
I saw in the paper that last Tuesday was the warmest New Jersey day on official record since 1881, at 69 degrees. The same day in 1904 was -34
Ditto on all of the above.
To be fair, most of the “OMG, isn’t it soooo kewl to wear a bikini in December!!” reports are courtesy of local weather spokesbeasts (and sponsored by the Ronco Sunshine Spellunkicator).
You don’t get it ! It’s not normal to be 60 degree in Dec. in New England !
The trees think it’s spring and budding this could kill them when winter finally does get here . I am finding ticks on my dog still , insects that should be gone are still around . Plus it’s hard on your body , you being to get use the cold and then it’s 60 out ! I agree with the OP this weather is not normal !
I want my four seasons!
We still have box elder beetles running amok here, though I reckon there will be a considerable die-off tonight when it freezes. These guys are bad news for box elder and maple leaves and house attics; they should have been gone, or at least over-wintering by now.
I swear these temp swings are why I have pleurisy (reference my other complaint thread :p)
^ This.
CA is getting some rain (and even snow*) from this ‘El Nino’.
At this point, people are thinking the drought is over.
Um…
No.
The '82 El Nino was a drought-buster.
This is not even ‘average’ precip - we won’t even be able to re-fill reservoirs with this piddle-ass stuff.
-
- the Sierra snow pack is what supplies almost all of CA’s water - the gradual melt during the summer is what feeds the rivers.
The forecast for where I am in New Jersey is the mid 60s Wednesday, and the mid 70s Thursday. Yep, the 70s, in December, in the North East, on Christmas Eve. Amazing.
Yes, that what happens during El Nino, the West Coast gets above average precipitation. Still nothing to do with climate change.
Well, I wasn’t in diapers at age 20, but I’ll grant that it’s possible that I don’t remember. Fortunately, the Internet does remember. In 1997, the first 19 days of December in Cleveland had an average high of 39 and an average low of 29, with an overall high of 51 and an overall low of 22. The same 19 days this year, meanwhile, showed an average high of 53 and an average low of 41, with an overall high of 71 and an overall low of 29.
In other words, compared to “the last very strong El Niño”, this year’s average low has been two degrees warmer than the previous average high, the average high has been higher than the previous maximum high, and the minimum low has been equal to the previous average low. In every respect, this year has been significantly warmer than 1997. Now tell me again that this is “just El Niño”.
So then you have a cite, rather than idle speculation. Please share it.

I have zero desire to go back to the raging blizzards and snowstorms of yesteryear. My grandmother could remember it snowing every month of the year except August. I’ve lived in areas where snow could be so deep houses were built with second story doors so people could get out when the snow were up to the roof. We dont get those anymore.
And thing is, global warming doesnt have to mean hotter summers or drought. The midwest has had pretty good rainfall this year and summer wasnt too bad.
That doesn’t prove anything about “climate change” causing the current temperatures. Try again.
In case anyone missed it:
I have been in this area since 1979 (I moved at age 30, not ‘in diapers’).
This ‘Massive El Niño’ so often hyped, has not produced even CLOSE to NORMAL precip in Northern CA.
'82 broke a drought - by dumping near-continuous rain from SF to a bit below Auburn - above Auburn, it came down as glorious snow.
'97 was a bit wetter than normal.
This is NOT an ‘El Niño’ re North Cal. This is BELOW normal precip.
