And still no evidence that it’s caused by so-called climate change, rather than usual variations in the weather. :dubious:
They say the band on the Titanic played “Nearer My God, to Thee”.
There seems to be some dispute on the point.
Just in case, you might want to download it to your music player - it just might come in handy.
I do not think those words mean what you think they mean. The temperature this December being considerably warmer than any year on record is not caused by climate change. That is climate change. You can maybe argue about what’s causing the climate change (at least, if you’ve been shut out from all sources of news for the past two decades), but the climate change itself is right there in front of your eyes.
This kind of weather has been happening in December in the Northeast for decades. That’s why people struggle with the concept of Climate Change, because it’s so gradual and so common to what they experienced all their life. For example, Buffalo in 1987 was in the 50s most of the month:
I’ll bet the people attributing the present heat solely to El Niño are the very same people who used relative coolness to “refute” AGW when El Niño’s cool sister La Niña was active last decade.
Oh, see, it can stay 60F all winter as far as I’m concerned. Yesterday on the news they said it’s going to be in the mid-high 50s on Christmas day
Last winter cemented my opinion that my body can do without snow and cold. Unfortunately m husband and dogs don’t’ share this opinion.
BTW the only insects I’ve seen so far are winter moths. And yeah, my rhododendron out front is budding.
Not to mention that I’ve got a pretty sizable credit on my budget billing for oil because 1) the price is so low and 2) we’re nowhere near using as much as we did last year
That’s what gets me, the people COMPLAINING about warmer winters??? Like have you ever had to shovel out a driveway? Have you ever had your pipes freeze? Do you know what it’s like to get stuck in a blizzard?
I think instead of fighting global warming we should be embracing it and preparing for any changes. I cant wait to start growing orange and banana trees in Kansas.
Yes, to all of the above. Many of us, to judge from the thread. What’s your point?
And I hope to be long dead before people can grow bananas extensively in the midwest.
Again, slightly-warmer average temps doesn’t mean there won’t be blizzards and cold spells. There will–and the extremes may be even worse.
I’m a northern New Mexico transplant to New York City and even a normal winter up here is a little too warm, a lot too rainy, insufficiently snowy, and never has any of those “holy SHIT this is cold” days.
This 50-60 degree stuff is just ridiculous.
Me, too and the Santa Anas were bad, too.
I want my winter back.
Grew up in Buffalo and spent most of my life in the Midwest and New England. I still want my winter back.
The last two winters brought us literally feet of snow that lasted until April and stretches of weeks at a time that were record low temperatures. Nature owes us this.
Exactly. And a warm December doesn’t ‘make up’ for disasters; it forebodes more.
Wait, what? Is this a real thing? I’ve been trying to figure out what’s going on with my asthma, too. My regular, daily meds seem to be barely working and I’m having to suck on my puffer way more than normal.
We’ve been having record breaking warms and then record breaking colds for weeks. The temperature changes dramatically almost daily.
Everybody I’ve been talking to here has had the worst allergies they can remember. I think the warm and damp is encouraging mold growth and without the freezing temp to inhibit growth, it’s just been extreme. I usually have fall allergies until the first frost, usually in late October/November. I’m still taking a Claritin every day. I have to imagine this could impact asthma, depending on the trigger.
Count me in as a fan of beautiful weather in December. My heating bills are lower, I can dress in comfortable loose clothes rather than bulky coats, I don’t have to shovel snow from my driveway or drive in the slippery stuff. My kids can enjoy the zoo or the playground more. I don’t care whether the cause is El Nino or Global Warming…if there’s some way to keep this consistent from year to year, let’s do that!
It won’t rain enough. The USA west of the Mississippi is in long-term drought pattern now.
And I hope you have room for some displaced Maldivians and Bougainvilleans.
Oh, that’s easy. The technology has existed longer than recorded history. You could move yourself to a different climate. Perks of this include not flooding entirely out of existence the island nations of the Indian Ocean.
I guess you’ve never heard of a water hose?
Look global warming has been going on for decades. Even in the high plains like the Dakotas they dont get near the extreme cold and blizzards they used to get. Also they have been getting higher average rainfalls also.
A thread griping about lovely warm weather in Dec. Could only happen here on the Dope.
Priceless.
I’ll take all the warmth mother nature wants to provide me. Bring that sunshine on. I’m tough and can take it.
We were behind on rain , practically no rain back in Aug, Sept and Oct. But have made it up in a very wet Nov and Dec. I think we’re ahead a bit now for the year.
