Why do people think it is okay to bring a lit cigar or cigarette into my store? Into a bar that permits smoking, okay. Into a restaurant that permits smoking, not really cool. But if you consider my store to be like any other retail service (like a clothing or book store), why do some people think this is okay behavior?
Especially cigars! That is a smell that I don’t like in the first place, but it lingers for hours in the store. I’ve had to ask several customers to take it outside. I don’t care if someone is just buying something quick from behind the counter, YOU CAN’T SMOKE IN MY STORE!
I’ve asked the boss if we can put a “No Smoking” sign in the window because this is ridiculous, but he doesn’t think it’s necessary.
I don’t think this is really worth putting in the Pit, but mods, feel free to correct me (I think I write that in every starter post now, lol).
They think they can come in smoking because ther eis no No Smoking sign.
Smoking is their default behavior, so they smoke. Tell them to NOT smoke, and they may grumble, but they won’t smoke.
Your boss should rethink the concept. The smell gets into product and makes it harder to sell. I worked for a woman who had her husband come in at night to do the books. He smoked cigars. She was mortified when we had a very expensive plush baby toy returned because it smelled of smoke. She was even more mortified when the sender refused to pay for the flowers that the toy was delivered with because it was such an embarrasment.
It’s the boss’s business, but it’s also your health and his stock at risk.
I used to work at a store that clearly had a no smoking sign on the front window.
The irony… the manager kept an ashtray on the front counter for the customers who smoked.
I never did understand that one.
Well it’s a liquor store, so the smell isn’t going to get into the merch. BUT it will linger and make the store stinky and I went home once faintly smelling of cigar smoke b/c it stuck around so long.
How much can one of those “No Smoking” signs cost anyway? I’ll spring for one. Gotta bring it up when I go to work.
