No, you ignoramuses, this *isn't* racist (or, "Here we go again..")

…short version: Tana whacked Chris Masoe over the head with a handbag: hilarity ensures.

I think they should have cast white people in this ad from the Caribbean.

It is perpetuating negative connections between blacks and fried chicken. They don’t have to tell us “WE LIKE IT” as we already know that don’t we

Two hours later and still no response from you.

It seems to me that you’re implying an ethnic slur.

If that is not the case, then I apologize.

If that is the case, then why don’t you just come out and say it, so we can take this to the Pit and “settle” it there?

Not that it proves anything either way obviously, but I’m just wondering if any of the people who have a problem with this ad (Finn Again, Fear Itself, Freudian Slip) have ever been to a cricket match of any type, let alone a test match in which the West Indies are playing.

From personal experience, there are stereotypes at work here, but they aren’t based on racial tension.

Because I am not allowed to in this forum. You are free to pit me if you feel you must.

Before doing so, could you be so kind as to confirm that I was correct in reading your intent?

Fear Itself, have you even yet accepted that the ad is portraying a lone Australian cricket fan sitting amongst a group of West Indian cricket supporters, and that such a fact is instantly obvious to anyone who follows international cricket?

The Racial Slur Database

I am sure that is true. But that does not exclude the liklihood that it also has racial content. It is not an either or propostion; it can be two, two, TWO mints in one!

If I were to confirm your inferrence, it could be construed as an insult in and of itself, which would violate the rules of this forum. My comment was intended to be ambiguous, and it shall remain that way. I apologize if you find that unsatisfying.

But when we asked you to explain why you thought as such, you kept pointing out how all the other supporters were black (which we explained), and that it wasn’t possible to determine who each person in the ad was supporting (yes it was, which we also explained).

If your belief that the ad has racial undertones was rooted on something else, why didn’t you state what the “something else” was when we asked? Why instead did you go with the above?

Because the fan loyalty was not clear to me. That has been cleared up. But that does not negate the likelihood that there was also racial content.

How weird that they all have two-word usernames beginning with F.

Come on - the Irish are the last group us Americans are still allowed to make fun of. The leprechauns in these ads was actually sober so I would say they are pretty tame as St. Patrick’s day ads go.

I agree with you Fuji. I’ve never understood how this sort of thing is acceptable.

As for KFC - they have walked a fine line for a long time. They target black people in their ads because they seem to be a big part of the KFC consumer base. There is also a well worn, very old, offensive stereotype here in the US about black people liking fried chicken (as well as other foods.) So KFC should have lots of experience navigating this minefield. This isn’t the first misstep and it won’t be the last. KFC is a big boy now, it can handle a few complaints about how a few people may have been offended by one of its ads.

WOW, cool you argue for racism with insults and racism. That makes sense to me.
So if you are in favour of this kind of argumentation, why be offended be an Australian TV-AD?

I have not made any insulting or racist remarks. And for the record, I am not offended by the OZ ad. I can recognize racial content when I see it though.

Really?
You clearly hinted it quite clearly.

How is that an insult? Or racist? Talk about political correctness run amuck.
