Nobody has Rock Band yet?

I thought it was supposed to release today? I was really hoping to read some threads on it, so I can decide if it’s worth it considering how many friends the BF and I don’t have these days - I want to know more about the single player experience. Nobody has it yet?

It’s sitting in its giant box, still sealed on the kitchen table, beckoning to me…mocking me…but no, I swore to my brother-in-law I’d wait until we got together on Thanksgiving to tear that mother open, rock hard, and wave our hands in the air, almost like, perhaps we don’t care or something.

Stupid family promises.

Well, can I come over? You didn’t promise not to play it with me, did you?

Waiting for it to come out on the Wii. Very impatiently, I might add.

Not a hijack attempt, but while watching the promotional spot that kept airing for this game over and over last night I kept wondering how many idiots will be offing themselves while car surfing as a result. Hopefully none, or maybe if we lose a few it’s Darwinian in nature.

I can’t really comment on the single player experience yet. But hopefully you have at least one other player, because I can confirm that two player is a blast. Supposedly, Band World Tour mode (two-player minimum) is where most of the fun is and that’s what my fiancee(drums) and I(guitar) played last night. After all the equipment set-up and character creation, we only got about 10 songs into it before we forced ourselves to get some sleep for work today but we were talking this morning about how we can’t wait for “St. Cool” to play some more gigs tonight.

First thoughts/impressions:

  1. Guitar parts are a little easier than GH.
  2. GH skills don’t transfer to drums. unless you’re a real drummer, it’s probably back to easy level for those.
  3. The guitar buttons felt stiff and too wide, I’ll probably switch to the GH3 controller tonight.
  4. The freestyle drum fills and guitar burnouts are a really fun new addition, just don’t forget to hit the fixed finishing note or it is all for naught.
  5. I liked that you can see your # of stars earned for the performance while you are earning it.
  6. I like that you can save eachother from failing out of a song or return a person who failed out by activating your star power/“overdrive”.
  7. I love all of the role-playing elements they added such as customizable characters, choosing between challenges, asking your manager for advice, etc…
  8. Oh yeah, the songs were great too. As a huge Pixies fan, I’m in heaven.

I’ve got it on the Xbox 360 and I’m in love. The guitar parts are definitely easier than GH3 and like BlueSilver, I don’t really like the new guitar. Even though the note charts are easy, they were giving me trouble while I was using the new guitar. I went back to the GH3 controller after several songs and saw an immediate improvement in my playing.

The drums are very very hard to play. My wife used to be a percussionist so she makes them look easy. When I tried, it looked more like I was playing whack-a-mole than drums.

Singing is surprisingly fun. I got 100% on the first song I tried on easy. I messed around a little on expert and failed out about a minute into the song. I’m interested in trying this out some more, at least when the house is empty.

The single player mode is kind of ho-hum. It’s almost identical to Guitar Hero minus encores and those horrible boss battles. It’s not bad but not really exciting either.

The multi-player world tour mode is awesomeness in electronic format. It is vastly better than anything the Guitar Hero series ever offered in terms of coop play and this is based off of playing with just one other person. I’ve got some friends coming over this weekend and we’re going to get some 4 player sessions going.

You’re addicted. It’s a nasty downward spiral for you. Halo is your salvation.

I’ve played the demo at Wal-Mart, because I’m waiting for it to come out for PS2. For me, who’s never played drums a day in his life, the drum parts were too easy. I started on Expert and there’s not a song I can’t do, but I also have years of experience with rhythm/music games, and the display doesn’t have the bass drum pedal. I don’t like the guitar at all, but I’m really very used to the GH controllers, so I’m pretty biased there.

Halo’s that game with Mister Chef where you cook up delightful pies isn’t it?

Maybe someone here can provide the answer, because trying to surf the Rock Band forums on the game’s website gives me a headache.

We just got a PS3, and we anticipate having Rock Band very soon. As I understand it, the only way to have two Rock Band guitars is to buy two Rock Band bundles, since the guitars aren’t slated to go on sale individually until January.

So my question is, is there any way to take the guitars from GH for the PS2 and use them on the PS3? Although I’ve already stated unequivocably that I will be the drummer in our band, I want to be able to rock out side-by-side on the guitar with my wife on occasion.

Also, I was a little confused about whether or not you’re able to do BWT online as of yet (meaning different band members playing at the same time from different physical locations). Anyone know?

I’ve read that there are PS2 to PS3 adaptors available for GH controllers.

And the rumor is that a patch will be released shortly to make BWT online possible.

I just ran across this interview with Harmonix that was conducted earlier in the week. So much for BWT online.

Well of course it’s a cinch then! With no bass drum pedal! That is like saying all of the guitar songs are too easy on expert level - if I never hit the orange notes. When you start trying to incorporate your foot it is like rubbing your head and patting your stomach. With the bass pedal, I was feeling pretty confident in my drumming on easy so I decided to move up to medium and then it turned in to a sad mess.

It’s all about the peach!

The bass drum adds a whole different dimension. I do play some drums and, while I’ve unlocked about 6 cities so far playing drums on Expert, I’m having a difficult time reading the drum notation in time. I’d have a much easier time if I just actually saw trap notation on a musical staff. I have a tendency to add extra kicks where the game doesn’t want them. Also, the kick pedal is plastic with a spring, so it has the action you’d expect. The little 16th note patterns in a song like “Creep” even require me to do the heel-and-toe thing (come down on the first sixteenth note with the heel and hit the second with the toe) to hit them consistently.

For a game, the drumming parts are actually surprisingly pretty well coordinated to the actual music.

The guitar part is like GH, but easier, for the most part. I haven’t tried the vocal yet, though.

All in all, a very enjoyable game.

Can’t say I’m thrilled with the singing aspect (and this is from someone who has both Karaoke Revolutions for the regular X-Box AND Boogie for the Wii). We did some four-person things today and it was a blast. We’re still trying to figure out all the nuances, because words and bonuses keep flashing up on the screen and we don’t know what we’ve done to trigger them, which is weird.

How the hell does one do the drums on Expert without the pedal? You’d fail within ten seconds.

The demo versions at Best Buy hit that pedal note automatically.

I can not wait to play this. I actually haven’t even really played GH of any version. I have a friend who is going to buy this for his xbox for our new years party (and many parties after I’m sure.) I plan on getting GHIII for my Wii sometime soon just for playing on my own at home. But this sounds like it will be amazing as a group game. I can hardly wait.

I played Rock Band last night. I’ve never played a GH type rhythm game before.

I didn’t like the guitar at all. KILLED my wrist. LOVED the drums. Really really fun. Secret: start with the drum pedal down and lift up to hit the drum. Saves your shin muscles.

Singing was also very fun and I HATE to sing in front of people. Who cares with Rock Band? It’s also fun to get a song where everyone knows the words and get the whole band singing along.
