Nominations for Ignorance Fighter of the Year

Please post your nominations for the SDMB Ignorance Fighter of the Year for 2003. Nominations should be for the person or persons (non-board members) you believe have contributed most to the fight against ignorance in 2003. If enough Dopers are interested, in about a week’s time I will start a voting thread where we can determine the winner of the award, which I propose we call the “Aldrin” in honor of Dr. Buzz Aldrin’s inspirational hands-on approach to debunking the ignorant notion that the Moon landing was a hoax. Nominations should include a short (or long, depending on your preference. But I prefer short.) explaination as to why the nominees deserve the award and relevant links, if possible.

To start things off, I hearby nominate Salam Pax, the Baghdad Blogger for SDMB Ignorance Fighter of the Year. Throughout the run up to and aftermath of the American invasion of Iraq, Salam used his blog (itself a relatively new tool that came into its own in 2003) to tell the world what life was really like in Baghdad. While both pro- and anti-war pundits, bloggers, politicians, Dopers, and citizens regularly spouted off about what they thought was for the good of the Iraqi people, Salam’s was the only voice of an ordinary Iraqi who managed to make himself heard over the din. His blog entries are honest and full of insight about what war means to people caught in the middle, making Where is Raed? essential reading for anyone who claims to have an informed opinon about the situaion in Iraq.

Dopers, whaddaya think? Who deserves the Aldrin?

Can I nominate Qadgop the Mercotan? Or does it have to be outside the boards for the general public?

Non-board members only, please. I don’t want to start a board popularity contest.

(no offense, Qadgop the Mercotan!)
