Non-American National Songs

A lot… some of them are sung only by some people, others by every Puerto Rican.

The following:

Oubao Moin, Preciosa, Verde Luz, ¡Qué bonita bandera!, La Borinqueña (revolucionario), Himno de Lares, La Tierruca.

More modern ones, could be Salimos de aquí. Concerning mostly the capital city, you have En mi viejo San Juan.

All of them are in Spanish… translations or webpages if requested.

Gah, and I forgot (more traditional):

Boricua en la luna, La Estrella Sola… and relating to Vieques, Isla Nena

I don’t get “Rule Britannia”.

Britons never, never, never shall be slaves!

Who ever tried to enslave them?

The Romans?

Oh. Well, that’s awfully long to hold a grudge!

They weren’t Britons back then.

ducks

  1. The Spanish
  2. The Germans
  3. The Dutch (although we did invite them)
  4. The damned French. Repeatedly. (Although in fairness we spent most of our time trying to do the same to them)

Its not really a cry against some past slavery. Its more a cry that no matter how hard anyone tries they will never succeed.

Its kind of a nineteenth century way of saying:

"Come and 'ave a go if you think your 'ard enuff!"

Okay, color me informed!

Eighteenth-century. Thomas Arne’s Alfred, of which “Rule Britannia” is the closing number, had its London premiere in 1745.

I’m not big on nationalistic songs, but I think “Czerwone maki” (“Red Poppies”) counts as one of these in Poland.

I hate the Fields of Athenry, so I wouldn’t want it as an anthem. My hatred comes from playing it WAY too much.

If I was to pick an anthem for sporting occasions, I’d pick “On the One Road”.

I think Flower of Scotland is an incredible song.
