Non-Asian matrial arts?

I’m no expert on judo history, but everything I have seen indicates that Kano himself modified or eliminated the most dangerous jujutsu techniques to form his “gentle way”. Judo has changed more over the years as it became more sport oriented, but at least some of the changes were made by Kano.

I study a style that includes jujutsu, aikido and judo. I get to work out with people who have dan-ranks in all three, so it’s very interesting to see the differences. Any given technique is done slightly differently depending on whether it’s the jujutsu, aiki or judo application. The modern sport-oriented judo has certainly reduced the self-defense effectiveness of some of these techniques and eliminated some altogether. None of this is a criticism of judo. I bring it up only to elaborate on your point about the level of sophistication in Japanese throwing arts compared to other non-Japanese systems.
