Non-believers mentioned in past presidential inaugurations?

Obama included non-believers explicitly in his address (in addition to Christians, Muslims, and Jews). Is that a first, or have there been any previous presidents that have included atheists in their inauguration speech?

He mentioned Hindus as well.

I’m glad that you asked that. I was wondering the same thing. As a non-believer, I am thrilled to finally be included.

I meant to post this link: Inaugural Addresses of the Presidents of the United States Archives - Collection at Bartleby.com

There you can read every inaugural address ever given. If you have the time, you can read them all and let us know.

As an Agnostic Neopagan, I’m offended we didn’t get a mention.

(Not really.)

Those of us watching at work were pleased and surprised.

A bunch of us were watching in the kitchen area at work. When the sentence started I wondered where it was going, and did a little “woo hoo!” at the end.

This athiest felt happily included, too. Much better than Bush 41’s alleged statements excluding us from patriotic and civic comraderie.

The Buddhist with whom I was watching felt a little left out.
